Hamstring Injury

I can't seem to shake this hamstring injury! I'm going on about two months and its still lingering. I can still do most workouts, but its always barking both during my workout and throughout the rest of the day. I can even feel it while laying in bed! Should I just go on the shelf for two weeks or just battle through???

I inured it on a trail run with plenty of climb. Nothing traumatic or nothing acute during the workout. I just woke up with it feeling tight. I've never battled a lingering injury like this.

Any advice?

  • My right hamstring gets hurt a lot. I've found that when it won't resolve with continued running- stop running. I had to take two months off over the summer. I biked and did the elliptical at the gym (hadn't been THERE in a while!) and then started back with a combo of run and elliptical- I'd run a lap every 5 min on the machine, then next week run 2 laps, etc until I was back to running. I think I have scar tissue now and it takes a lot of stretching and rolling and being careful to keep from getting hurt. Bottom line- if what you're doing hurts, stop doing that. Also, ice when resting helped.
  • I'd would rest it and do some rehab work. Are/have you been doing any focused strengthening work in that area? If not, the time is now!
  • If it hasn't gone away after two months, I would certainly see somebody medically. I had a hamstring tear and think I waited to long to get it diagnosed. I was stretching it a lot....which turns out the worst thing for that injury. I then went through many medical people to finally figure it out...and went through a lot of rehab. It's still not 100% but I am still competing and training..just need to watch myself. Overall however, the injury took me out of action for a year.
  • It sounds like a relatively minor strain. I suggest finding a licensed sports chiropractor certified in ART (active release technique).
