What Do I Do About Bone Spurs On My Knee?
At present I can bike and swim but can only walk. In August I had to go to my local orthopedic Dr. and X-rays showed two small bone spurs on my left knee. We have several possibilities (over training, poor strength training, left foot large toe dislocation from Junior Year in HS...Im 70 now, and just plan age). I am having acupuncture, physical therapy, and taking 800 mg ibuprofen. I am getting orthopedic shoe inserts for the left foot (it's very painful after biking 3-4 hours). The Dr. says my bones otherwise in great shape and I have good cushioning etween the ones. But five months later I still can't run! I had a bone spur in my left leg in 2014 but it only cause pain in yoga when doing the child's pose. In six months I was back to doing the child's pose but that doesn't seem to be the case this time. And yes I can't do the child's pose again since I can't get that much bend in my left knee.
5K runs require 52 minutes to fast walk. Completed IM Maryland 10/116 but needed eight hours to fast walk the marathon finish. Any suggestions on recovery? Have you had leg bone spurs and returned to running; how'd you do it! Tks.

Jim, I'm not a doctor, but I have had my share of problems with osteoarthritis in my knees. I suspect a solution depends upon where the bone spurs are located in your knee. Are they in the inside (medial) joint line? Or outside (lateral) joint line? Are they under the kneecap? In 2004, I had arthroscopic surgery on my right knee. The meniscus on the inside was trimmed. Afterwards I could not bend my knee to do the physical therapy. The doctor injected me with a "lubricant" called Synvisc. Since then I had a similar substance injected into my left knee called Orthovisc. They both helped my knees. I don't know if this will help, but you could ask your orthopedist. Best of luck.
Thanks for the input Jim. I have two very small bone spurs on the end of my left thigh bone. To see them my Ortho. had to enlarge the x-ray. The pain is on the interior of the knee. There is some shaded area on the interior also that he said was probably arthritis. I'm still doing acupuncture once a week and rubbing on an Asian ointment. Almost everything on the small bottle is in Chinese so I don't really know the ingredients but they smell like Tiger balm. I have about 12 exercises and stretches to do each day and they seem to help some. I'm in the OS but can run so I hope to increase my bikes but most are indoors and watching videos breaks my concentration.
Jim, I can't add anything to what I mentioned before. I would just say I had some success with Orthovisc. It is 3 injections into the knee over a 2 week period. The injections don't hurt more than regular shots. Good luck, Bob
