wrench question

I guess I should have researched this earlier.... anyway, bought a compact crank, FSA Vero, but figured it would just go with my DA BB. Well, of course not.  So, I guess I need an ISIS BB, PD or JIS???  Have no idea what they are or if they are compatible with my frame.  I have an '06 C'dale slice, any suggestions?  Thanks.

  • You need to figure out two things... what BB the frame will accept and what the crank needs. FSA cranks do not work with Shimano BBs.

Assuming your DA BB is the newer style one with the external bearings, I would assume you frame takes a standard english threaded BB. Plus, I'm about 95% sure the 06 Slice still used the standard english bottom bracket, but the newer slices all use BB30 so you may need to double check that. Also, I am not aware of a Shimano DA BB30 BB.

If that is the case you need to get a FSA BB that is designed for that crank and fits a standard english BB.

If you have BB30, things get a little more complicated because you will most likely need a BB30 adapter (but you may already have this if you are running a DA BB now).

    Clear as Mud Now?

Basically, you will need an FSA BB designed for that crank and I'm pretty sure just standard english thread will be what you need.

  •  I agree with Matt.

Does your current DA BB just have cups so that you can see straight through the shell or does it have metal sticking out?  Either way I think you are going to need an english threaded FSA BB.  Almost all BB shells are english threaded BTW.  Good news is that it should not be very expensive.

Best bet is to take it to the LBS and let them sort it out.  Also getting the Front D adjustment right can be a bit tricky and they can take care of that for you as well.

  •  Yes, it is the english threaded and BB will have to be square tapered.  Maybe the LBS will have a used one laying around.... thanks guys!

  •  Brought it to the LBS and they need a shorter BB 107mm I believe?  I also didn't have the tools to install so it was good, problem is by the time all is said and done, the part will be $35 plus labor.  I wish shops had used parts!.  I'd ebay or something else because I've seen as low as $9, but I'd still have to bring it in they are nice so I'll suck it up.  Thanks for the advice.

  •  A new nice rolling BB will be a good thing to have.  No use in giving away watts.

  • While they are in there doing the work, have them chase the threads of the BB shell, adjust the front DR and tune the shifting.

I'm sorry but bicycle parts, maintenance and upkeep are damn cheap compared to other hobbies. I used to do 90% of the work on a $17k Goldwing motorcycle because it cost me $150 minimum to have an $8/hr kid touch my bike at the dealer. I didn't think twice to complete tear it apart and figure stuff out. But I can't be bothered to figure out how to tune the shifting on my bike because it's so cheap, comparatively, to have someone else do it for you.

  •  @Rich: will do, they are okay at my LBS, nice guys, overcharge sometimes, but they can usually fix anything without any worries.  You must understand where I live for that statement to make sense, one of the guys there asked me what that "thing" was in my rear hub.  It was funny the other day when they wanted to size up the correct BB they of course had to remove my DA BB first, and one was holding the bike upright while the other was standing on the BB tool to loosen it!  They were a little embarrassed with me standing there, I guess I tightened it up a bit much with last year's overhaul!  If only they have seen what I have done with that bike.  Hopefully the BB comes in before I have to leave Thursday, I need to get to LP before dark so I can set up my tent!!!!  Thanks again, can't wait to test it out on some hills, I'm bit tired of mashing up everything.

  • No worries, I bring my bike to Wheelbuilder after 4:30pm (FedEx shipment), ask Rich to hook it up, then buy him a beer afterwards. Works
