DOS 16/17 - Run Week 3 - Santa Claus is coming to town!

Happy Monday all!  I will try to get back to last week's thread as we had some good questions, but first, the thread for this week.  I'm not sure if you have heard or not, but there is a holiday at the end of this week that a lot of people celebrate and spend time with family.  This week can get quite ugly with personal commitments and as type A triathletes we often feel the stress of fitting in our scheduled workouts on top of all the other things that need to happen.  My advice (and like most good things I say, I stole this from someone much smarter than I) is squeeze in what you can but don't stress over a missed run or bike through this week.  That is not permission to totally blow off the week, but it does mean if you can only squeeze in a 45 minute run when the plan calls for an hour or more, so be it.  This is not the time of year to flex that type A muscle.  Spend time with the family and relax.  Enjoy the holidays and you will likely be better for it with a good mental recharge.

Topic two today is the weather.  I assume pretty much all of us have felt the effects of the "polar vortex" over the last week or so.  For your running I have a few thoughts.  First, if you are going outside, gear up for it.  That means hats, gloves, something to cover the face, warm socks, etc.  If it is too cold for you (we all have a different temp threshold), hopefully you have access to a treadmill.  I will typically do a quick run over my lunch at work or squeeze it in right after work before my daughter's activities start to take over.

Good work so far, keep it up!

  • I decided to skip Sunday's run bc it was terrible here weather wise. The wind chill was torture & gym is not open Sunday. This evening I did 6mi 45min and got the MS from yesterday in. I know we are not supposed to make up a missed workout but I can shuffle this week & still get it all in without compromising I think. This is run endurance training right?
To top all that off my son got 2 congressional nominations today. One to his first choice Naval Academy & one to the Air Force Academy. Glad we ran before he got the call & mail or I would have been trampled trying to keep up w him.
Good luck to everyone this week and Merry Christmas to all.
  • @Tommy - most weeks I have to shuffle things a little to make them work for weather, work schedule, family, etc....

All, I'm on a little different schedule than yours as I am doing longer runs on Sunday usually....

  • OK, even though I'm a Mac guy, I'm hooking up with the DOS. I did the first two weeks at the end of Nov/start of Dec, then went skiing for two weeks. I got back on Friday, and did a 3.5 mile run just to see if I still could; everything worked just fine. I thought I was being prudent to take Saturday off, then swam as usual Sunday morning, and went for a six mile run in the afternoon. Four miles @ LRP/TRP, and onto the track for a little quicker pace. A mile @ close to TP, but my left hamstring/glute felt funny, so I didn't do the second one.

All evening, and yesterday, I realised I had done "too much too soon", so apparently (a) after seven decades, I'm more fragile than I thought I was and (b) after 50 + years of training for this that and the other thing, I still haven't learned to start back up slowly and (c)skiing is not the aerobic leg substitute it used to be for me . The stupidest part of this, I've done this thrice before in the past two years, so I need some kind of Rube Goldberg device to hit me over the head whenever I try to add on more miles or pace too quickly after taking a couple of weeks off of running. Heat and rest are improving things, but it may be a couple more days until I can try to run 5 K again.

  • Translating Mac for the rest of the group =====> Mature and Crazy!

  • Good morning DOS peeps!

    Quiet group here so far.............

Looking forward to all the running posts forthcoming!

I was able to get in an "after work" run yesterday with a 1X1 interval.... https://www.strava.com/activities/807512213

Was a long work day, did not feel like it, but felt better once I got through it as is usually the case.

    Happy hump day all!

  • Oh boy, SS and Al T in the group?! The work output just jumped a notch or 10. I was up this morning before work and got in about 8.5 in my 65 minutes of running. All TRP, felt pretty good though a bit colder than I planned for. The temps have come off the floor and I was a little too eager for a bump I guess. I might jump in the pool later today but we shall see. Great work so far folks!
  • Had a great strong Sunday run with 4x1mile intervals added into the long running
Today felt really good on my steady run of 8 miles. Paces already feeling easier.
  • I got a run in yesterday at lunch in a break in the weather. Last night I started feeling like I was getting sick and I woke up this morning with a sore throat and achy body. So my workouts today consisted of sleeping in (until 8:00 AM, I haven't done that for a long while) taking the dog for a couple of walks, having tea and a cookie, wrapping presents, and soaking in the hot tub. Just finished dinner and I'll probably soak in the hot tub again before a glass of wine and going to bed. Tough day. I don't want to know what my TSS for the day was.

  •      Finally able to get my DOS going. I've been fighting every kind of bug since IMFL, and it didn't help that the six weeks after I worked 37 of the 42 days most 12 hrs. I don't like to take any med's, but finally gave in and went to the Doc(he's a runner). He put me on a regimen, and told me to take a week off, and it worked.

         Wed. 6 mi. run @ ~TRP  1 hr.  23 deg.

         Thu. 3.1 mi. brick  ~TRP   42 deg.

          Fri. 6 mi. run @ ~TRP  1 hr.  27 deg.

  • @MM  - get well soon bro!

@ML - HUGE running consistency in less that optimal temps!!  Nice job!

    @Rafe - knocking down 4X1s like child's play!  BAM!

  • So far good week running and biking. 6mi, 3,7mi, 8.1mi, 5.3mi running plus 2 bike days and still have the weekend to go. If I could just get this pinched nerve fixed I would be all set to get back to normal.
  •      Merry Christmas all, hope everyone has a very blessed day!

Sunday run done: 3 mi. as Zn 1 out, TRP back, then 2x1mi @ Zn 4 pace, plus a short CD.   6 mi. total in 65' time includes recoveries. Hadn't run any threshold miles in a while-good workout.
