Run Watch

Good Morning! I am new to EN and am loving it so far. I would like to get a better watch- mine has heart rate and a stopwatch, but does not do pace, etc. I do have a bike computer that has cadence and speed/distance. There are SO MANY watch choices out there. Running is my weakest event of the three. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm not worried about price, but I don't want something that is more than I need either. Thank you!! (P.S. I'm seeing a lot of info about not doing HR and doing pace instead- I have a coach call on Tues. so I may know more about which way I'm going then....)

  • Hi Laura,

I just purchased the Garmin Forerunner 920 in red and white.

Waiting for my power from Stryd to arrive.

    Ask Coach Patrick about both.

at the Maid page of En. go to :

Store ~Team Discounts~scroll down to STRYD ~ Click on the web site for STRYD~ Watch the videos on STRYD Power for running.

  • I finally bought a Garmin 920 last year. I've had the Garmin 405 and 610, gradually upping the ante in capability. The 920 is hands over fist better than the lower models and gives you swimming capability (pool and OWS) and many other features. They are pretty cheap now as Garmin is getting ready to release the latest and greatest tech.
  • I'm with Paul...love my 920! image
  • 920 is the way to go ........

  • I have had both the 920 and the Fenix 3 HR. I prefer the Fenix because it looks more appropriate for work purposes. Plus having the HR built in sealed the deal for me. Both are very good, I just prefer the Fenix.
  • I just got the Garmin 735xt and really like it. It has a built in optical HR monitor which allows me to get rid of my HR strap for all my runs. Great as a daily wear watch as well. My old 910xt was way too big to wear everyday. It even tells me to "Move!" when it notices that I have been sitting too long. Recommend.
  • I'm interested to know how that optical HR function works out for you so please keep us posted. Regarding the move function, the 920xt has that and I turned it off because it often beeped at me right after I got back to my desk after walking around the office, or more annoyingly, right after I got back from a long run or bike ride.
  • I have a Fenix 3 HR and love it. The battery lasts a long time. The HR does not perform well for me in cold weather but works well when it is above about 70. It syncs great with my phone and all of the different types of sensors.
  • Have had a Garmin Fenix 3HR for about 5 weeks. I went from a Garmin 910xt, and was doing manual uploads with an ANT stick, so I was really due for an upgrade. The functionality of my new watch is above and beyond what I will ever need. I'm still finding new things it can do. I am also trying to figure out how to get it to do the things I want it to do...but that's really more a function of me diving deeper in and spending the time to learn. Battery life is really excellent, and this is the advantage that the Fenix has over the 735xt. As far as the optical HRM, it works okay, but not great. I was using a separate Mio Link HRM previously with my last watch, and had much better readings. Hopefully it'll work better in warmer temps as someone else mentioned.
  • Thanks everyone! I went with the red/white garmin 920 and I love it! I even took it on a hike with my son and we got turned around and I was able to use the navigation feature to go back. The HR monitor seems accurate, even in the cold Michigan weather. I'm a teacher and when I wear it to school, the kids always comment on it. The screen is big, but that seems to be "in" right now. I didn't get the swim strap, but I might in the future- as a swimmer I am more dialed in to my pace than I am on the bike and run. Anyways, thanks!!
  • Late to the thread, congrats on your new watch @Laura Searle! I didn't realize the 920 had HR built in. And really cool on the navigate functions.

@Mark Maurer, I've got a 735xt which hands down has been my best watch I've had (305, fenix 2, and 235 also). The limited battery life (7-8 I think) rules it out for single device long distance use. I find the HR to be accurate most of the time, sometimes starting a run when it's cold out it will be out to lunch for a mile or so. The Mio Link optical is spot on all the time, I love that as well and often use with my bike head unit
