First wko after taking a week off to rest a strained hamstring. Lost some cardio fitness and my calves started cramping up. It was great to get back to training though.
It snowed today and the garage was about 33 degrees. I fueled better today, but it was still a challenge to hold the 2x15". The 2x7 were better, of course, but by then I was more fatigued and it still took a lot of concentration. So there I am, sweating in my sports bra and shorts, and my feet are freezing! I had to get off during a rest and put on my booties. Helped, but my feet were still numb. I stopped at 90 min and decided to add the time to the run. I had to make a pit stop to warm my feet in warm water before heading out to do my brick in the snow. I'm not used to cold winters anymore and initially chose the wrong gloves- thankfully, the first part of any run is a mile with the Yorkie-Poo and Golden Retriever, then I drop little one off and finish with Golden. It was his first snow and he loved it. Grabbed some winter cycling gloves on the break and was pretty comfy the rest of the run.
Oh yeah- sleep totally jacked up after a call at 0430 from the Command Post to tell me we are in SnowCon 5- that mean up to two inches starting in the next 2 hours. Seriously- how is that worth a wake up call? It didn't start in the next two hours and I don't think we got two inches either.
Glad to see everyone is still killing it this far into NOS!
This was another struggle to hit my targets requiring much focus and positive self-talk. This is building solid mental toughness, but glad it's done! 4x14' were at 1.0, .99, .99, .99. Then 2x9' were .82 and .84.
The Thursday 2x (18 x 30/30s) went pretty smoothly, although the first couple were harder to hit 120%. After that, the legs woke up. Got a little tired for the last 5 or 6 in the second set, but still managed to get there. Since it was only 60 mins, was able to get the brick run in on the TM, but slower for the first half.
The Sat morn bike went better than Tuesday, mainly because of those 5 min breaks between beatings. Due to the Tuesday melt-down, I kept the first 15' at 0.99, then hit 1.0 for the second 15'. Definitely felt the fatigue for the 2x7's, but 7 mins def went by quick enough to push through the perceived discomfort and hit 1.0 for each. I did not have enough time for 110mins, so cut the ride short at 90, and got ready for work.
Great job finishing out the week strong after a rough Tuesday everyone!
@SS - Thanks! Also, The 3 X 20' was just an amazing effort, especially after a week of skiing and time away from the routine.
@Leslie - I am picturing you in the garage on trainer with shoe covers on. Does it keep you HR down in the cold garage? Warm gloves on the run are game changers. I used hand warmers this weekend and loved them!
@Derrek - You are killing it! I need to harness some of your mental toughness.
@Mark H - That is great progress from all your hard work!
@Bill M. - Great sets! I hope the skiing was just as good!
I only did the first 2 X 14'. I am still getting back into things after my vacation, and I think my run volume is starting to make my legs a little tired. It is really hard to stop when I see all the great results you all are posting.
I've got a cupboard full of a bunch of sample packs of various nutrition that I have gotten at races. I decided I am going to try to use it all over the next few weeks and try some new things. One thing I tried on the bike ride is Hammer Heed. I also had a tube of some carbohydate discs (I forget the brand) that melt in your mouth like a fast dissolving Cert. I really do not know if they helped, but the Heed tasted horrible. I liked the carbohydrate discs, but I have no idea if it gave me any extra energy. I usually eat a few hours before the weekend ride, but did not this week, because I was short on time. I know that was not smart, and I will try to plan better next time.
@Brian, I'm not sure what my HR is doing bc I gave up on the HRM. It's just erratic. But my chest hurts from high heart rate if I'm going crazy Z6, so I don't think the cold is inhibiting it (Z6 on testing). It did look pretty funny, I guess.
Also, regarding HEED- stay away! That stuff almost killed me (for real) at the Hotter N Hell a few years ago. I didn't realize it has very few electrolytes and I got so dehydrated and lightheaded I almost passed out on the bike. I tried it again on a HIM and it gave me such terrible gas it's probably a good thing I was slow and BOP that day! I'll never subject myself to that crap again.
I'm racing Texas 70.3 in early April. My cruise is an eastern carribean out of Fort Lauderdale. Our flights and our cruise started the day after the terrible shooting there, flight canceled and we only made the boat through a series of minor miracles. Most importantly my family is safe.
And while I'm eating way too much (is 6-8 rolls a day too many?!), and family time is priority, I'm getting 60-90 minutes of some type of work in each day.

@Leslie - No worries - that stuff will not hit my taste buds ever again!
