Got a nice compliment today
Today was the final day of a class I was teaching to 6th graders on bike repair and safety. One of the kids who participated came down to the beach and stayed the whole day with me as myself and the other volunteers talk to people about volunteering in the schools. He helped me fix a few bikes for people that came by and we talked a bit. At the end of it he needed a ride home so I offered to take him home in the police car.
When we got to his house he wanted to show me his new bike and wanted to pump up the tires on it, while he was pumping them up he says "you are a very nice policeman and thanks for helping me"
Made my day, maybe just maybe I influenced one kid enough to stay out of trouble and to seek help if he does get in trouble.
10 weeks of volunteering all made worth it by one statement.

Awesome! You are a nice policeman.
Suh-weet. Well done!
Coulda been like the Mean Joe Green coke commercial, except the kid is holding a hot dog, gives it to you, you slam it and toss him your duty belt. Even better for you, it coulda been a commercial so you could screw up like, 35 takes, and eaten all them dogs!
Or sub Krispy Kremes for hot dogs and it's a Rockwell, totally cliche moment
You are a great guy, that is for sure.
That is Special! You are Special , Steve, for doing what you did, giving your time. Only one chile expressed how you made a difference, I'm sure many more felt it, it made a difference, and hopefully it will keep them going along the right path. Thanks for doing what you do!
