Steve Ross JOS Marathon Hack

Hey Patrick gotta few questions to ask on how I should go about this. First up I am in the JOS group and have a marathon scheduled for April 23rd 2017 in of all places Toledo Ohio.A little background first. Was scheduled to do a marathon end of October 2016. That got canned due to iced up roads at elevation, hence I trained specific for hills. Since then I have stayed run fitness sharp with a lot of short snappy runs x 4/5 weekly. My runs now are up to 6 mi(10 km) or longer. Just started to implement long runs, today was a 13 miler. At present I feel/know all trg points to a 3:30 mary today. My goal though is to get under the 3:25 marker, so I have to earn 5 mins+ over the next 14 weeks. I usually hack the OS myself but my bike fitness suffers "to much". I am hoping to find a balancing act here. My FTP last year at best was 238(lowest ever). FTP this week was a 227 my best start in a few seasons. My run test was done on the TM first time eeevveeer 20:30 min(vdot 48). Goal is to TM run during the week and get my butt outside for the long runs. At present feeling very fit and I am injury free so there are no limiter's. Thoughts ???!!!! on how to go about this ?

  • Steve, thanks for reaching out! I love where you are at with your fitness...we only have to remember that high fitness / no injury doesn't last forever.

I like to hack the OS, but not too much..so take the basic week but clear out long run for SAT (instead of Sun) and convert the long ride (from Sat), into more Z2 / z3 time on Sunday...so it would look like this:

    Mon - FTP Run (2 x 1, etc)
Tue - FTP Bike + TM Brick
Wed - TM Tempo Run (6 to 8 miles)
    Thu - VO2 Bike + TM Brick
    Fri - OFF, Recover, etc.
Sat - Long run, per your marathoning. Steady through mid-Feb, negative split thereafter.
    Sun - Long ride aerobic.

    Thoughts?

  • Agree with the overall look for the week, TY. My only observation right now is my tempo run is a killer pace. I can do the bike Thursday and the run Brick, but my body will say "be on the low end" for my run speed/pace(fatigue)thoughts run before bike? Push, pull, or play by feel if I do the run after or before ? Like Fri off for sure ! Thxs for the steady state long run Sat, agree with time frame mid Feb. Come mid Feb/March will want my long runs on Thurs. Hate hurting on the weekends on my "time" when weather gets better to do other "things"! Will check in a month to tell you how things are progressing and yes to fitness injuries, hence a great topic to be discussed and dissected. I remember Robert Sabo was asking about injury issues on the dashboard a couple of months ago. I had lot's to say but so little space,(lol)! Have an awesome weekend !!
  • @Steve Ross Let's turn off the Thursday Brick...I'd much rather have the Wed quality for you.

And check in Mid Feb re moving long runs...we can do that together. Hope you are staying sane with all that snow!!!

I have to admit "P" I am a nose to the grind worker, nothing special about me, no need to baby me. Love push and push easy/hard where needed. Not a big fan of exposure or exposing who I am. Not a fan of X personality, so no to online shit. I am on strava/garmin/other yes.I kinda kep things close for sure
  • Steve, no worries. I know you aren't soft or looking for flowers and smilies after each workout...I justed wanted to follow your progress!!!
