16/17 DOS Run Week 7

Happy Monday (and MLK day in the states).  We start week 7 this week and the most noticeable changes are that some of the runs inch up again by 5 minutes.  The one that is likely to hurt the most is the one on Wednesday since that is 5 more on top of a longer run.  In the end, I don't think any of the additions by themselves will make you worry.

I wanted to talk about my experience with run durability work and downstream effects.  Two or three years ago, I did a 3 month run durability block where each month things built up a bit more with a the weekly mileage goal changing.  It's not too different to how we are doing this in the OS.  As mileage crept up, I kept monitoring myself for signs of fatigue in the workouts themselves without as much attention paid to just day to day life.  When I finally did, I noticed that, even though I had hit pretty much every workout as asked, I was a little more chippy with those around me and tended to feel like I might be getting sick.  In retrospect, I learned that for me at least (and I suspect most of you can do this too), I can make myself power through a good number of workouts at less than optimal.  And because my focus was largely on frequency, I was able to get in a good groove once in the workout allowing me to feel that I was still ok.  Some of the other signs clearly pointed to a need to better manage the fatigue.

I ramble all this to you for two reasons.  First, be as observant outside the workouts as in them and see if some of the signs are there (extra snarky or having an issue with everyone is a sign for me.  Poor sleep can be another).  Adjust now if you need to before it gets worse.  Second is that we are only half way.  While that is a great thing, there is a ways to go.  And if you don't pace yourself appropriately through the 14 weeks, you won't make it through the 14 weeks in the way that you wanted to at the start.

Lastly, we seem to be a small group that leads to not much posting.  If you are a lurker, please join the gang.  Let us help with your questions and celebrate your successes.  Have a great week all!

  • Last week was a good run week for me. Goal was 4:35/28 mi. I did 4:35 with a little over 29 mi. Unfortunately, the next two weeks are travel weeks for me. I'm going to do the FTP test this week and the run TT next week in between trips when I'm home, and just try to get some running in when I'm away from home. I've built some pretty good fatigue and I've avoided all the sicknesses so far, so I'm going to focus on keeping travel stress and fatigue to a minimum, and hit it hard when I get back. Happy week 7 everybody.
  • Thanks for the thread. I thought I was the only one doing this. I'm new and still trying to navigate my way around the website. I can relate with what you are saying. It's funny how I might neglect the common denominator which is me in all my situations.

I have been incorporating my kids into the equation so that it doesn't seem so secluded. Can't always train with my training group so instead I plop all three on their bikes and they follow me like ducklings for 10 miles on the Greenway.

Mondays are great though. Anyhow, thanks for creating this thread.
  • @ Ed, it sounds like you have your own home grown training group.
  • @ Scott, you are so right about needing to be on top of the signs of over-training, which at this stage would appear not in our muscles or fatigue *during* workouts, but in other aspects of life apart from the training. Grumpiness, difficulty sleeping, needing more sleep, hunger, inability to keep weight up, and just plain sense of deep fatigue are the signs for me.

Dec OS is a new thing this year...historically, the coaches have avoided endorsing a DOS, as few folks entered and many who did dropped out as the holidays took their toll in the first month. So we probably have a small group to start with. Then there are people like me ... I'll be "dropping out" after this week, as I take a four week ski break. I'll keep running a bit, but will pick up the bike workouts with the Jan OS group after Feb 19. Truth be told, I actually started with the Nov OS, dropping out of that after my Dec ski break!

  • Scott, I have no idea what you're talking about. I haven't been grumpy or snippy with anyone on the team and then Al starts piling on about not being able to sleep. Jeeze, I'm getting paranoid here. Have you guys bugged my house? Oh wait, you're talking about signs of over training. Nevermind. :p (sorry I just couldn't resist.)

One of the things that I monitor is my resting heart rate when I wake up in the morning. If it's out of my normal range then I start looking at other things too. So here's my progression:
    • 38-41 normal, proceed as planned
    • 42 - 45 caution, look for other signs such as grumpy, lack of motivation to do workouts, loss of concentration at work, etc.
    • 46 - 49 take a day off, I may be coming down with something or I'm on the edge of over training
    • 50+ step down. Either I'm sick or in over my head

Great opening thread and timely for Week 7!  Thanks SG!

It is a balance to say the least and requires patience.  On one hand you obviously want to get paid for the hard work being put in by realizing more fitness and it would be great if it happened sooner than later.  On the other hand, too much load too quickly and you find sickness, injury, etc., that can set you back a few steps.

If you find that you are increasing your total load (TSS) week over week by more than 10%, you are rolling the dice. Don't forget that this Total Load includes work/family stress because your body does not know the difference.

When it doubt, follow the plan, or better yet, just rest!  Listen to some of the great points Scott, Al and Mark offer up.....good wisdom!

Woke up moving slow this morning!

  • Today I pulled a couple of Z4 miles on the back end of this lunch run: https://www.strava.com/activities/836308799

    Wore me out......tired.. o
  • We're being hit by a pineapple express, aka atmospheric river, which is a rain event that taps into tropical moisture from Hawaii. So it's been very wet here all day. I've been trying to get in a stair stepper-run-stair stepper session once a week to get ready for the Alaskaman so today was that day. 90 floors then 2 miles on the indoor track then 90 more floors equals two tired legs.
  • Testing next week so I pushed it on the run yesterday to see where I am as compared to before.  Vast improvement but I'm not looking forward to the bike spinup session tonight.  Weather is perfect in Atlanta so not many excuses other than I don't want to pop into mind.  It'll be a different story and context once I'm done.
  • Got the run done yesterday. I plan to test on a TM, but when it's 60 deg. outside at 5 am in the middle of Jan., how can you resist that!

I broke a ten-day daily run streak cause I just got tired of getting wet...but I did swim and do my 30/30s.
  • Good morning all!  Apologies for going dark for a few days there, but I was sent out of town for work for a couple of days.  While I was gone, I did the Wed long run and the Friday short run.  I did them both in AZ where I was sent and am always amazed at how flat it is there, at least in the Tempe area where I was.  Not that St. Louis is the Rockies or anything, but there aren't even bumps where I was running!  Made for some fast and slightly boring work.  Good job all getting in the work.  My flight got home pretty late last night, and my plan to do Thursday's work today may not come to fruition.  I think I could make myself do it, but I am also worried it would make tomorrow a brutal slog that I might not get done.  It is good to be home!
  • I'm going to have to try and pull a Scott G. next week as I am traveling to NYC for a few days!  Hope I can live up to the tenacity it takes to keep the running going while traveling......issue I have right now is that Scott G. hasn't left me any excuses!

  • SS,
You are many things, but a man who makes excuses is not one of them!  I will add some details on the bike side, but my wife called me out on trying to be lazy today, so I did the Thursday bike with a 40 minute brick.  I do feel better having now shaken off the plane funk.  Happy Friday all.
  • My. Legs. Are. Dead.
  • Happy awesome weekend all! Today it is going up to almost 70! Due to scheduling, I did my long run this morning and will do the bike work tomorrow. For the run, I got in 12 miles. It was also my first run with the stryd powers meter. Other than I have some data at this point, I don't have much else on that. Should it provide some insights, I will pass them along. Have a great Saturday all!
  • I did a run on Saturday after marching downtown to the Women's March on Washington Olympia version, marching, and then marching back home. I also threw in some running in boots during that to get ahead of folks to take pictures and then running to catch back up. The run was 5.3 miles but all in all I put over 12 miles into the old legs yesterday. https://www.strava.com/activities/841011143
  • I've seen a lot of great Sunday runs across the board getting done today!

I closed the week out with some 800M intervals: https://www.strava.com/activities/841188452

  • Though I'm in FL, my last few Wednesday & Sunday long runs have been indoors for various reasons.  I must admit that I find some sort of twisted satisfaction in reaching the maximum allowed time on my treadmill then having to restart it.
