Anyone else doing 2017 Marathons?

I have decided to take 1 more year off of doing Ironman to spend more time with my kids. Last year was trail running and ultra marathons. This year it will be a return to road racing, specifically the Marathon. I want to do 3 marathons this year with the goal of hopefully cracking 3 hours. I plan to do some biking this year as cross training. The plan is to leave 2017 with a solid base to build from for my return to Ironman racing in 2018.

This is my tentative schedule:

- LA Marathon in March
- San Francisco Marathon in July
- California International Marathon in December

I will sprinkle in Half Marathons and other races where they fit. Anyone else racing any of this?

  • Peter im not but I wish I was!

I'll be following your year with great interest. This is my long distance racing year but I love the marathon and plan to return to it in 2018. Best of luck in your goals, it looks like you've got a great plan. Breaking 3 hours will be a tremendous accomplishment. Ill be living vicariously through you!

doing Boston and Chicago this year.  Just did Austin Half as training run.  However, many of my running group will be at CIM  (Gilbert's Gazelles lead by Gilbert Tuhabonye from Burundi)
  • This will the be the year of my first full marathon. Running NYC! I'm looking forward to the experience.
  • Awesome! NYC is on my bucket list
  • I'm training for my first ironman in AZ on Nov 19.  I just got invited to run the Marine Corps Marathon in DC on Oct 22.  Can I get input from the EN community on whether this is a good idea?  I'd like to run it but don't want to screw up my training.  Thanks!  Keith
  • If you are treating IMAZ as an "A" Race, it seems like a REALLY bad idea to me to do a stand-alone marathon a month ahead of it, even if's it's just a fun marathon that your won't be crushing yourself in.  That is literally one of your last 2-3 prime training weekends, not to mention you likely won't be the same for your big IM training the following week either.   AND if you are planning to actually run the marathon "hard", then you'll be trashed for all of your remaining IM training/Race Rehearsals.  My vote is a resounding NO.
  • Keith, Totally 100% agree with JW.  If you don't want to screw up your training for IMAZ, forget the MCM at least for this year anyways.

  • Keith, these guys ^^ are correct in 99% of the scenarios, but you didn't say where you live and what you want to get out of MCM and AZ. If you live near DC, just want a MCM finisher medal, are OK with jogging for 16/walking for 10 as a Week 16 long run, are just looking to finish AZ in 14 hours and would be OK with 15 hours, you could do it. But if you have meaningful goals for AZ, will have to travel to DC and/or want to run/race MCM, it's a recipe for disaster in Tempe. You wouldn't even be recovered by race day in AZ, and the "run" would be a cold, dark, painful walk.
