2017 IMPR70.3 Training Thread-7 weeks to showtime (1/23-1/29)

Puerto Rico/Tri Club Champs Crew!   Yes, that is where we will be in less than 8 weeks, ahhh!!!  Checking in with everyone to see how the training is going and to see what everyone's plan will be starting this week.  Personally, I have just finished up the 14 weeks of the NOS and will begin the Adv HIM plan tomorrow taking me through to race day.   Already I've noticed some changes in the plan from last year and am excited to see how I will adapt.

With 7 weeks to go lets keep each other motivated to stay focused and determined with the goal of bringing home the top prize for our team.  WE GOT THIS!

  • I'm going to do a little recovery, a bike test, 3 days swimming, and keep up with the run durability.  I will go all in on week 10 Adv IM next week.  Going to NYC this weekend and will do a long run in Central Park. The hills will be good prep as the run in San Juan has two or three nice inclines.
  • After 4 days of work travel this week, I'll be home for a while and will jump into Week 10 HIM next week.  My running has been pretty ugly all winter, but finally started to come around last week.  Moving to 30+ miles/week this week, and I'll start including some real hill work because this run course is beastly (tailor-made for the Sabo's and Behler's).  Bike watts are starting to rebound, and I'll make sure to get 3-4 longish rides on the tri bike because this course is flat, windy and all about the aero. Swimming has been nothing but form work thus far, and I plan to do the bare minimum amount of pool time to cover 1.2 mi in a warm salt-water inlet.

With the quality of the team we're sending to PR, my goals are to have a blast, shoot for a top half on the team and only be chicked by DS.
  • Glad we got the smack talk going!!!
I've been doing a good build on bike & run... started getting motivated on swim, then the nasty sinus infection hit... Have been holding body comp in check, this week, I started getting serious and am stoked for the group we have. After seeing the full list that Brenda put out, my only goal is to not be DFL and do the EN brand proud..

@Mike Roberts - where to look up good course notes?

oh, and for tri bike training, I just sold my road bike today (was actually too large) so the tri bike will go on the drainer for tomorrow...

@Danielle Santucci - will be a force to reckon with, she's doing some supah secret heat acclimatization.
  • @Scott, Paul Hough did it last year and successfully dogged the bullets. I recently read Jason McFaul's RR. He did the TX camp with us, where he had to drop SS and me b/c we couldn't come close to hanging, then he went on to KQ at TX. PR offers a little bit of everything: crowded, current swim; long TA; potholes, wind and draft packs on the ride; cobbles, steep hills and stupid-thick heat on the run. Sounds like a blast: https://www.google.com/amp/s/jasonmcfaul.com/2015/03/19/race-report-70-3-puerto-rico/amp/
  • @Scott Dinhofer you jest about my heat acclimation but when I don't blow up on the run I will know it worked!

@Mike Roberts if I chick you the first round of pina coladas are on me that night :)

@Rob enjoy running in CP...I need  to start running some hills myself this week!
  • @Danielle Santucciwhat plan and week are you on and what is your heat prep?
  • @Danielle Santucci - if you chick him, HE should be buying the drinks!
@Robert Sabo - Danielle apparently goes into a "sauna" which is really her study with a picture of Fabio on horseback and then attempts to do core work while staring dreamily into Fabio's eyes

  • @Scott DinhoferI spit out my water when I read this. You crack me up!!!  Damn you bc now everytime I go in there I'm going to be thinking about a Fabio picture!!!

@Rob I've recently read that 20' in a sauna 3x a week increases your endurance as well as acclimates" your body if you are going from cold to hot temps.  Will it work?  I have no idea, but it's worth a shot and the other benefit I've seen is the pesky H2O weight I've been carrying is dimishing (body comp goals taken to an extreme, ha!).
  • @Rob plan is Adv HIM week 6.
  • @Scott Dinhoferforgot to ask....where is this list you mentioned that Brenda posted about who from EN will be there?

Wow...how did I miss this thread?   I'm in week 12 of OS, and cutting over to HIM plan next week.

Here in WI it's been all indoor trainer rides and probably 50% treadmill running.   I'm not doing anything for heat....frankly don't have the time for adding Sauna into the regimen so I'm going to just grin and bear it.

Feeling strong, but not so much endurance.   Just started swimming a couple weeks ago...need to ramp that up.   Last OWS I did was in Kona which was also no-wetsuit so I have that going for me...which is nice :)

TBT dropoff is under a month away so my first outdoor Tri bike ride is guaranteed to be in PR.   Yikes.

Looks like my swim wave is dead in the middle of the starts with the 45+ men and all women in front of me so promises to be a crowded swim for sure.

But that picture DS posted above looks pretty amazing...maybe I'll just bronze myself on the beach and cheer on you fools.

@Danielle Santucci - so happy I can be helpful and that you will also be thinking of me every time   o:)

also, an ENer prepping for Kona some years ago did stationary jogging in the sauna as well. I will probably start to adopt this program when we are 4-5 weeks out.. which is soon.

Please be gentle when you swim over my slow arse

    by Brenda over here
  • Thank you Danielle - you rock! My run game is non existent and my new bike isn't even in yet. Sooooo this should be interesting! Still time to make a dent though.

Ironman asked me last week for a quote on "what we would say if we won the title" (or something along those lines) --- I would be interested to know what all of you would say WHEN we win the title?

Jumped in the pool this week and was reminded I don't own a swim skin just a wetsuit --- everyone really love ROKA over XTERRA? Thoughts?
  • The Rona looked nicer but not twice the price nicer. I bought the xterra for about $100.  Do people wear that over the short sleeve EN trisuit?
  • @MB, I have a top-o-line Xterra and Roka.  They're just textile, so fit is 99%.  The Xterra just never fit me well.  I've only worn it 2x, it's a M (supposedly can accommodate 5'5"-5'10" and 145-175lbs).  You are welcome to try it, keep it, toss it, burn it or turn it into a quilt.  You know where I am.

"I truly believe EN is the greatest ever.  But we're a humble group, so I would never actually say that."

"Triathlon really is a simple sport: a bunch of people in spandex swim, bike and run.  And when it's over, EN wins."
  • @Robert Sabo
I still race in a two piece and don't own the sleeved EN top yet (NEW ONE TO BE RELEASED SOON!) so I think I need a swim skin. I have however seen peeps wearing them with all sorts of kits

    @Mike Roberts
Yep --- might take you up on that - I'll shoot you a text thanks!

  • But that picture DS posted above looks pretty amazing...maybe I'll just bronze myself on the beach and cheer on you fools.
@JB given the state of my running lately, I could be convinced to beach it with you

@Mariah BridgesI'm tailoring one of my tri tanks to make it "sports bra like" because @Mike Robertssaid it's going to be stupid-thick heat and bc I don't have that one piece either.  Hope I'm able to squeeze myself into my swimskin by then
  • I just found this thread. Susan and I will be joining the team for an awesome race. I've been in DOS for the past 9 weeks and will drop in Advanced HIM next week. I did a bike test on Wednesday and had a 12 watt bump. Today I ran a HM in 1:44. It was the longest and fastest run I've done since Kona and it hurt the last 2 miles. Since I did a 53.5 mile bike last weekend l figure l can begin tapering now, right?  :p  Glad to be here.
  • To those of you who have done this before, how are the side winds? Will I be OK with a disc rear wheel?
  • When I did it 5 or 6 years ago I used 808s and had no issues with crosswinds.
  • Mark, I haven't raced it, but most people I know who have had gone disc and have reported that a ton of other people do as well. Flat, straight and windy? To me, that's ideal disc conditions. I'll definitely be riding 808/disc.
  • Thanks. I have a Flo 60 front and a wheel builder disc back which I'm very comfortable on in windy conditions so I'll go with it.
