Ultra runners; can anyone talk pro/con of Ultimate Direction vs Orange Mud type vests?

I need to self support for roughly 2 1/2 hours of the marathon portion of Alaskaman this summer. A camelbak type pack would probably work ok but I look to move toward trail/ultra running in 12-18 months and want to make a durable purchase.

Anyone with thoughts or experience with a conventional running vest vs an orange mud pack type vest?

  • I love orange mud, they make great stuff. Traditionally they have had their Quiver based packs, which holds up to 2 bottles. More recently they have released a traditional vest that holds collapsible bottles in front, and an optional bladder in back.

My vest is the Salomon Skin 3 5 Set vest that is very similar. I love my vest, but if I had to buy a new one I would consider the new Orange Mud Endurance Pack, just because their quality is top notch and I like the way the zipper fully seals everything in back.

For 2.5 hours unsupported I think you need the full vest with bladder and the bottles, the quiver wouldn't cut it. You can hold 100oz of liquid this way.

FULL DISCLAIMER: My friend is sponsored by Orange Mud. I have a discount code if you go that way: TIMSPEEPS
  • One thing to add is that the Salomon has more pockets for storing extra stuff. I have been able to fit a collapsible jacket in a pocket, along with lots of food and other stuff. The Orange Mud one looks like it is smaller, but perhaps can hold an even bigger bladder, 70oz vs 50.
  • @Peter Noyesthanks for the detailed responses, and for the discount code! Your right, the quiver style is not gonna carry enough liquid, I'm better off with a conventional style vest. I didn't know orange mud made one, looks to have great liquid and decent enough storage capacity for what I need.

The salomon also looks awesome, does seem to have a bit more equipment storage room.
