Paul Hough - Micro Management

Coach P - I'm currently in week 11 of the IM Advanced Plan.  I'm at my lightest weight in over 10 years and everything is going very well.  In week 12, I'll be going to Clermont for the QT2 Elite Age Group camp (11-14 Feb) and looking for any advice on what to change.  My thought is to follow the plan Mon-Thu, but on Friday morning do an easy 1 hour swim and 30 min run so I'm ready for whatever they throw at me Saturday morning.  Note:  there is no published schedule for the camp.  We will meet at 6:30am each morning and get our assigned work for the day at the time.  They do know that I'll be in the middle of an IM build.  Naturally, I'll be representing EN!  B)

  • @Paul Hough  BEST. LOCATION. EVER.

QT2 does a great job and my understanding is the camp can be quite hard...I would just go with the easy run, as the camp isn't about the first day, but how well you perform on the last day. And there's plenty of swimming, biking and running that will happen there.

We want you to be sharp there, and there's plenty of time to adding more training when you get back if required!

    Have fun!!!!!

  • Coach, week 14 is run focus but I hit 48 run miles this week and think next weekend should  be bike focus.  So far, QT2 camp has been about intensity, not bike volume.

Sat.  Swim first.  I made 3900 LCM in the slower group.  Then we biked 44 miles including 8 repeats of Sugarloaf.  First one was 'easy', then 2 x 3 (one in aero bars entire climb, one standing entire climb, and one stomp intervals), then one more easy.  30 min transition run back at the hotel.

Sun. Swim 4100 LCM.  Then easy ride out to Florida Boys Ranch Rd where we  did 3 x the road length (about 3.3 miles) as one low cadence half IM pace, one higher cadence 90%, and one all out TT.  Easy ride back for only 40 miles.  Break until 4:30 pm then bike to field for game of dap to work on handling then bike to the most ridiculous grass hill in Clermont... about .3 mile up.  8 x up plus jog back down ... BRUTAL.

Two more days to go.  We'd I am going to rest, then hit the long run Thu, but go 300 mins bike on Sat and 210 on Sun instead of cutting back for more running.  Does that sound about right?
  • @Paul Hough - Thanks for the update! Sounds epic...I think that you might have more fatigue than you appreciate. I don't know how you quantify that (TP.com?) but I think that you likely can get away with a 90' run vs a super long one (quality, not quantity right now).

Then back that up with your long rides for sure. Note, you'll need EXCELLENT nutrition and very easy early pacing to make both rides successful.

I do not envy your competition. :scream:

  • The volume came today.  I made 4350 SCY in the slow lane.  Lots of pulling and paddles today plus 6 x 25 mass start with everyone stuffed into one lane.  Long ride for me at 96 miles in 4:57 similar to our Van Fleet Trail ride last year then 2.6 miles transition run. I can out bike the three age group ladies in camp but Angela Naeth has been joining us and she is monstrously strong.  One more day ... starting with the swim again.
  • Last camp day:  3500 SCY with a lot of short intervals and speed.  Then a very, very easy bike -- just 14.5 miles in 1 hour.   The finale was running on the orange clay trail, but not a loop.  We did an easy warm up jog (1.25 mi) then they set up cones 1/2 mile apart on the road and had a coach at each one and we ran back and forth continuously getting an assigned RPE level for the next 1/2 mile when we came up on the turn cone.   This was in the afternoon at 80 degrees.  I got 8.25 miles total and was lapped by the faster guys.  This was an extraordinarily hard camp.  I will take tomorrow off completely then reassess how I feel.
  • @Paul Hough

WOW. Beast mode. You are my hero...that's INSANE WORK!!!!

    Please keep me posted!

  • Coach - I'm on Week 18 of the Advanced IM plan.  I'm 15 pounds lighter than last September and so far my build has gone "BIGLY"!  However, this weekend has huge bike volume and I'm facing a key work deadline and have to travel next week to boot.  No way I can do 112 Friday, Saturday, and Sunday...not enough time.  I will be able to hit 112 for sure either Saturday or Sunday; and maybe 2-4 hours on the other days.  Will that be OK.  Any prioritization I should follow?
  • @Paul Hough -- BIGLY doesn't even come close to describing what you've been able to achieve this built. At this point time I'm not super worried about you adding any additional stress. I like the idea of having a long ride on Saturday Book ended by a three hour ride today at two hour ride on Sunday. Ideally we'd see some of your best consistent efforts on Sunday or set that up to be a very flat space where you can stay on the gas.

Can't wait to see your race!!!

  • Thanks Coach.  Work has been crazy this past week, but fortunately they work with me.  My weekend went down like this:

Friday - 2hrs 35 mins on the bike trainer w TSS = 127 followed by 4 mile brick run.  Work the rest of the day.

Saturday - 6 mile easy run followed by 112 mile solo, outdoor ride in 5:35.  I threw down with IF = .715 and TSS = 285.  4 hours in the office after that.

Sunday - 4 mile steady run plus 4600 yard swim in the morning.  Lunch plus 30 min nap then 2hrs 31 mins on the bike trainer with TSS = 128.   Getting ready to head to the office.

I would have liked to have done the big miles in the plan but I had pretty good quality for that 3 day block.  I should be able to follow the plan fairly well the next two weeks although I have to travel this coming week.  I had a great 10 week build and with this new body comp and aging up, I hope to score in Africa or at least have a good showing.  It's going to come down to execution now.

  • @Paul Hough -- that is such a beefy weekend...you are more than ready my friend. Yes to travel, logistics and execution!!!!

    Jealous of your miles,

  • Coach P - I'm in Week 13 of the plan below.  This weekend includes "300 mins" bike on Saturday and "240 mins" on Sunday.  However, Sunday also says:  "Level 3 is 2.5 Hours!!!"  So is supposed to be Sunday 4 hrs, 2.5 hrs or is it 30 min WU, 2hrs Z3, and then 90 mins Z2/Z1??   Thanks for the clarification.

  • I meant for that to be 2 1/2 hours of the level III ride (4hrs total) is in zone three. I will check it out but that’s what I intended. Very sorry!
