JIM'S EXCUSES

Tks Fort Myers Beach for 3-4 months. I still have issues with 2 bone spurs on the distal end of my thigh bone; and a bit of arthritis in that area. I have seen and ortho surgeon friend who got me thru IM MD and got some Phys Therapy at home in NC. The pain has been with me since Sept. I claim pain level of 1-2 always and it goes up if I try to run. It's been 5 months and I do about an hour of exercises I got from my Phys Therapist in Nov and  manage to do them at least 5 days a week. I can bike but only have a mountain bike with toe cages and lots of vacationers driving around me. I do have a heated pool. I bike 60 min 4 times a week and swim 60 min 2-3 times a week trying to fit my training plan into my present situation. I don't know how better I am since the going is slow. I plan to find a sports focused Phys Therapist or ortho Dr. in FL to see where I stand. I completed a HITS oly in Naples, FL last month. Good news my fast walk and mountain bike got me 1st in my AF (...I was next to last with a guy in his 20s; very disheartening). I'd like to get to where I can go 2Xs as fast running. and I could "finish" any tri I entered and due to age could still get on a podium (for all but IMs I figure).   I will check with more PT experts before I go that route. I don't want it ti get worse.  I'm stiil here hoping and planning. Again tks for the email.

  • @jim ebert  Man, I am sorry to hear about the daily grind. I hear your schedule and I am wondering if there's any way to do run-like work without the pounding? Do you have access to an elliptical? Even some treadmill walking at incline (after a warm up) would be a nice intermediary activity if that's possible.

You've got a great schedule with the bike / swim + exercises. It's not that you aren't fit, you just aren't as fit as you want to be. I am hopeful we can narrow that gap, but it's going to take patience, some good medical advice, and likely some trickery (cross training, etc).

Please keep me posted on your next Dr appointment!!

  • our local community center has exercise equipment , i'll look to see if they have an elliptical and i'll try that. it's true it will probably be a long trip back, but I seem to see small improvements and had a bone spur in 2014 that seemed to go away in about 6 months. I'm hoping my therapy and a trip to a local PT or ortho Dr. will also help.

Tks 4 the encouragement. I'll let you and the team know if I find anything that works well. I did the IMMD in 2016 with this injury and figure if I have 8 hr for the marathon I can at least finish. Gotta find out if that much use is a negative to my overall training.
  • Sound good...you are grinding it out and that in and of itself is incredibly inspiring. Puts my aches and pains into perspective!!!

I'll look forward to an update from you soon!
