Now my wife wants to go to Europe for two weeks

My daughter Elizabeth is studying in London this semester.  My wife wanted to go and visit her at the end of the term and do a little vacation, a week.  Because the dates we settled on are just one short week after Memorial day weekend, she is pushing to go for two weeks.  (5/27-6/11) I know it is early but I am looking at how I will manage the current situation.  Currently I would be in the "bike focus" plan during the trip to Paris / London without a bike.  So, what do I do?

  • WB, do the Run Focus plan instead during that trip, assuming you can fit in the training, then pick up the TSR guidance as scheduled when you return. Have fun!
  • I'll be on vacation in Northern England at the same time (5/31 - 6/11).  I'll be getting up early each morning and running before the ladies get up.  By the time I get back, they've just finished in the shower, and I can get ready quickly for breakfast...then tour the rest of the day.  In 2014, we spent 3 days in London before spending a week driving all over Southern England.  I followed the same routine then.  In London, I ran in Hyde Park each day and noticed a club swimming every morning in the Serpentine; but with the number of ducks/swan crapping all over and around that shallow lake it didn't look too appealing to me.  Daily running was enough to keep me fit and when I got back I spent a week focusing on the swim and bike.
  • @William Bejin I know you've already got the "running thing," but maybe you dial back the running a little bit before you head out? Nothing wrong with investing a little bit more time in the bike if you know you'll catch back up again with the run.

At the end of the day the biggest thing you can do is just mitigate the damage from calories… And the best way to do that is to get something consistent every day. Worst case scenario, just track the steps and make sure you get more than 10,000!
  • The way my wife travels, 10k steps will happen before noon.  No rest when there is stuff to do and see!
  • I was just looking at the season road map and noticed that I have two weeks of "unstructured" time.  The next block is the bike focus for 6 weeks (end 6/25) and I'm in 'get faster' week 7 now.  I am looking for some guidance on pulling the bike focus forward to start at the end of the 'get faster' (4/30, ending 6/11) and then when I get back from Europe, change the end date of the bike focus to the original date (6/25) thereby repeating two weeks of the bike focus.  I will get as much running in EU as I can.  We are registered for a half marathon while we are there!  Thoughts?
  • WB,

I think that's a good plan. At the end of the day, do your best to run frequently in EU, without being a dork about it of course. That is, you're vacation in EU but getting in 30-60' of running each day would be awesome.
