CHEAP BIKE ON THE TRAINER??

I hate to see all that sweat dripping on my "A" bike!!!! ... Or B .... or C .... (even when protected), when one can get a "descent enough" old bike for a couple hundred bucks, adjust contact points accordingly (not a big deal) and watch it rust without any pain!!!
Unless someone tells me I'm hurting my training, I only see a couple of downsides:
- power transfer from the cranks to my direct drive kickr will not be as efficient; meaning I will be hammering a bit harder that the watts on the screen (that's ok)
- cheap bike = less gears. One only uses a couple on the trainer so .... who cares??
- another bike at home ..... well, this one is potentially dangerous .... "honey??? Another bike??? Are you serious???"

  • Carbon doesn't rust.  Use that one.
  • @Juan- I crashed my Tri bike 2 seasons ago. It wasn't wrecked, but there was a suspicious looking mark on the top tube that looked like a crack that my LBS told me was structurally sound. After deciding that I'd be uncomfortable riding that bike at 40mph down hills, I ultimatley decided to make that bike a permanent fixture on my trainer. I've pulled some components off here and there that I repurposed. The real benefit for me is the time savings and ease of me jumping on the trainer when the weather is warm enough for me to be riding outdoors. Last season I did many 1 hour wkos indoors to get interval work in didn't have to pull my wheel off maybe any other changes. If you have an extra bike to put on there, I say go for it!
  • @Juan Vergara - I have used the same "trainer bike" for about 15 years.  I keep waiting for it to collapse in a heap of rust dust, but no such luck yet.  I support your idea.
  • @Juan Vergara  I also have a 'trainer bike' that I use on my trainer mostly.   It's not a 'cheap' bike but it is a 'durable' bike...it's a classic titanium Seven road bike.   I use it on the trainer and also as my outdoor 'bad weather' bike that I use when I ride outside when there is still salt or sand on the road and I don't have to get my 'fancy' road bike dirty because then I'd have to strip and clean it as I'm a little anal about my bikes.
