Long Runs (EN Half Intermediate Plan)

As an example, the long Thursday run in Week 14 states that it is 120 minutes with 70' at Zone 2, 15' at Zone 3, 5' final push at best possible effort. Then says remainder time at TRP. Have a few questions regarding this:

1. I read elsewhere on the site about long runs topping out at 10 miles. So should this run be for the full 2 hours if will go longer than 10 miles, or should I stop at 10 miles if that is sooner than 2 hours?

2. Should the run being at Zone 2 or should the run begin with the TRP portion.

  • @Allen Goodling - Great question! The 10-mile long run "cap" is for the OutSeason®, not the Half Iron plan. In the Half Plan you should expect to build up to 120 minutes at least once, depending on the ability level. 

    As for how it plays out with the numbers you provided, I would see: 
    • 30' @ TRP (as you ease into the run)
    • 70' @ Zone 2
    • 15' @ Zone 3
    • 5' Best effort 
    • All of that ^above^ = your 120 minutes!!
