16/17 DOS Bike Week 13

Hi Gang, Well we’ve made it to week 13 of the DOS. That means one more workout of each flavor until we have another round of testing and then say adieu to the OS and move on to other things. You might want to think of this as a taper week if you want to get good test results next week. I know that I’m feeling the fatigue in my legs and I moved over to the HIM plan a couple of weeks ago. While that plan has more volume than the OS, it also doesn’t have quite the intensity that the OS does. The OS workouts may be short but they’re potent medicine and they put the hurt on your legs. Make sure you get enough rest to adequately recover. Thus my suggestion to treat this as a taper week. If you want to go into the test with some rested legs you might want to cut back on some of the workouts this week. It’s like the two weeks before a race, you really can’t get any better but you could blow the race if you don’t rest. I’m don’t want to suggest that the bike or run test is as important as a “A” or even a “B” race, but it will set the zones that you take into your next plan. It’s obviously your choice, but it’s also one of the many decisions that you have to make as a “self coached” athlete. (Yes, I know that RnP are our coaches, but at EN there is a lot of responsibility placed on each of us to recognize our limits and not follow the plan into a wall.)

Sometimes when I’m in the middle of a really hard interval I wonder why the hell am I doing this when I could be sitting on the couch watching TV or drinking coffee in a café reading a book. It usually just lasts a second or two because I know why I do this but it’s at those times that I remember this song that @Tim Cronk recommended to @Marc Taylor to add to his Ironman CDA playlist. Enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwpjsToHzAE

  • Thanks @Mark Maurer!

Recovery bike this morning for me: https://www.strava.com/activities/881562687

Definitely felt the yesterday's run during this work this morning.  Good to get blood flow moving to speed up recovery!

    Good luck this week all!

  • Tues. bike work done. Knew this would be a hard one, but got thru it pretty good. Recently added 2-3 1'(1') at Zn 4-5 at the end of the SLD's on the new WU to get HR up. 12'(4'),18'(4'),10'(4') all done @ .98  Good WKO.
  • So I moved mostly yesterday so I dusted off the bike this morning and did a ride around my new neighborhood. I largely went through some known climbs and felt pretty strong with it. My TSS was almost exactly what my previous Tuesday ride was, so there was less structure but similar work. Great work all!
  • @Mark Lane -  ALOT of work there this morning!  Well done dude!
@Scott Giljum - that is the way to look at it.... Total TSS / workload with many different ways to get there!

I tested last week as you guys know.  Slightly higher FTP is causing the pain I expected.  I did a 3X12' @ 1.0 this morning...  https://www.strava.com/activities/882603494

  • I am in a Bike focus week.  This morning's IM effort level intervals: https://www.strava.com/activities/883614467

Last week I put in a Swim test in between the Bike and run test on Wed then did the run test on Thursday.  Swim test was a slight improvement over the late Oct swim test....been swimming 2-3 times a week short intervals focused on form.....I am an adult onset swimmer and need this kind of work.

    Happy Run Testing all!!

  • I gave myself V02 interval work this morning: https://www.strava.com/activities/885119812

    Just glad its over......

Was anyone else suffering on that front with me this morning?

  • I did 6X2 last night and the last couple were dastardly.

I did a run this morning but not the long one scheduled for today. I'm doing a trail HM on Saturday so I'll save something for that.
  • Those V02 sets look solid @Mark Maurer!  Good luck on the trail HM this weekend!  Trails can be tough!

  • Thur. VO2 sets done:2X16X30/30. Legs felt a little fatigued until half way thru the first set, then felt good. Run done as a brick.

Sat. bike done, had to shorten things a little for time. 2X15(5) @ 1.0 & .98. Brick run 4 mi. @ TRP.
  • Nice job checking off Saturday @Mark Lane!  Consistency drive fitness!

    Saturday work done: https://www.strava.com/activities/887365676

  • No issues with the Z5 VO2 max ride this week, but the 12/18/10 Z4 the day after a hilly 1:20 run was a struggle. I ended up taking Friday off completely, and Saturday's bike--2x15, 2x10 Z4 went much better. Left out the speed work and went a little longer on today's run (came up about an hour short on the running this week, dangerously low temps and wind chills all week). I was very tired for the week 8 FTP test, and didn't get the results I wanted, so I really want to do better this time. I know I'm going to need fresh legs or it won't happen.
  • I know I have been absent from the forums a while.  I work as a physician and NEVER EVER get sick.  Last time I was sick was about 20-25 years ago!  Well this year we had a nasty influenza virus going around that was not covered by our flu vaccine and you guessed it.  I got it! Mid February.   Put me out of commission for a good 2 weeks and I have been gradually getting back on board.  Finally I have had some good workouts over the past 2 weeks.  I did get to do a half marathon trail race about 1 1/2 weeks ago and did well.  3rd OA and faster than I did same race last year. Got in a few good hard bike rides recently and waited and pushed my bike test until this morning.  I was able to get some more watts added to the 20minute test.  Initially tested at 271 before the OS then mid way tested 290 and today was able to knock out 296.  Can't believe I was able to push up that high.  I am gonna wait a few days and do a run test.  I have already shifted over to 1/2IM training plan and started up on about week 11 I think.  I am signed up for 70.3 Florida as a B/C race just to train through and also will be doing 70.3 Gulf Coast and also 70.3 Chattanooga both in May.  Hope to see some of you guys there.
