FOS Week 4 Bike Thread "It's Tricky"

Several musical themes were at the top of the list for this week, but as soon as I heard this gem from RUN DMC, I knew it fit the bill.

As we head into the fourth week of our out season, we are getting into the groove and rhythm of the rides, and it is important to keep in mind the macro view of the training we are doing. Although the rides are following the same pattern (warm up, spin ups, single leg drills, and an areo base build of x * y', ), it is up to us as self-coached athletes to find our way through the workout, either modifying it out of physical or time necessity, or digging deep mentally to get it done. There in lies the tricky part ~ finding the delicate balance between the mental and the physical.

  • Thanks for opening the thread @Elizabeth Hornak - great wisdom!

I tested last week as you guys know.  Slightly higher FTP is causing the pain I expected.  I did a 3X12' @ 1.0 this morning...  https://www.strava.com/activities/882603494

  • @Shaughn Simmons Thank you, and it is always an inspiration to look at your Strava files. Way to go!

  • was supposed to work today but got called off. Felt really run down. Hard heavy weekend in critical care. Decided with my grumpy attitude to take a "me" day. Loafed around took a long nap. Hubs made dinner and spoiled me. Feeling better. Still really tired. Not sick just emotionally pooped. I try hard to not let my mood dictate training but this type of mood I have learned, the hard way, to back off and rest.
Tomorrow is another day. Due to being scheduled heavy at work this week Coach P. has me taking an active recovery week. I'll be hitting it running tomorrow.

    Have a great day tomorrow!
  • @Jacklyn Moore - we often miss the TSS load just from a heavy work week and what that does to the body.....Coach P is a smart guy to recognize that and put you in a rest week.  Hope you're feeling better soon!

I am in a Bike focus week.  This morning's IM effort level intervals: https://www.strava.com/activities/883614467

Last week I put in a Swim test in between the Bike and run test on Wed then did the run test on Thursday.  Swim test was a slight improvement over the late Oct swim test....been swimming 2-3 times a week short intervals focused on form.....I am an adult onset swimmer and need this kind of work.

    Happy Run Testing all!!

  • @Shaughn Simmons- Thanks. Feeling great this am. Swam well this am. Getting ready to head out for my run before it rains. Loved your "short" run this am on Strava. I might have been able to keep up. ;)

Coach P. has me wrapped in proverbial bubble wrap. He knows me well. Sure glad I have him in my corner!
  • @Jacklyn Moore -  glad you found your mojo again! Amazing how some downtime can turn things around!

I gave myself V02 interval work this morning: https://www.strava.com/activities/885119812

    Just glad its over......

  • @Shaughn Simmons- You "gave" yourself VO2 intervals? Not sure that's a present.

Decided after the first two 30" intervals that today was a day to drop the hammer and see how high I could go. Not too shabby. Maintained greater than 180 watts. HR was reasonable for the effort.  That was FUN!

Keep up the good work everyone!
  • @Shaughn Simmons wicked work in the pain cave! With that workout, I hope an ice cold adult beverage of your choice is on deck!
  • I am strava-less, so I will post out and say that I really like the gains I seem to be making on the bike. I like the longer intervals ~ it gives me a chance to work through different gearing and try to keep the same HR / cadence.

My big news is that I've had PF in my left for about four years. I've toughed it out, and on Monday, finally decided to have a cortisone injection. Doc wants me to let it settle until Monday, so I did not run on Wednesday. I am hoping this was the right decision. Thus far, I have not felt the magic. :(

I will do my Sunday run on the elliptical, and look forward to running on Tuesday to see how the foot feels.

@Elizabeth: As I try to stay forefoot with my strike in order to lower the impact on my back, that pesky neuroma out there is reminding me that it has caused trouble in the past. I was able to avoid cortisone with some good orthotics... in my work shoes! I was surprised that they have not been necessary in my running shoes. (Relatively low volume runner). I'm rooting for a successful run for you on Tues. :)

Unspectacular one hour ABP ride this afternoon. I got out in the wind and stayed aero after a solid run this morning. Tomorrow I'm going to execute those Sat Zn4 intervals on the road. My short swim (no flip turns today) felt very good.

Made this bike an informal outdoor test. Using steep climbs and a howling headwind, I suffered mightily in throwing down 8',9',10',11' all with 4'RI @255-259w. I always test 25w higher outdoors, so that seems about right for an indoor FTP of 235w (up from about 218w after 4 weeks of training. My HR was close to max ovr the last minute! A few weeks until we formally test again. Can't say that I'm looking forward to that. Further gains will be harder to come by! http://www.strava.com/activities/889174973
  • @John Culberson what type of running shoes do you use? I am in NB, but am willing to break up with them in favour of Newtons, which I hear are da'bomb. I also have the green superfeet inserts. I also invested in a pair of dasko's which my feet have fallen in love with.

Awesome that you are outside and muscled through a tough headwind. You rode some interesting elevation, hence the name of Ransom Canyon!
