FOS Week 5 Bike Thread "Welcome to the Jungle"

Yup, we've arrived!

Time to assess the work from the previous week, and think about the incremental bumps in your training plan. On Tuesday's workout (I am looking at Beginner Plan, but will assume Intermediate and Advanced Plan is the same) think about Coach's and bike position - hence the theme for this week.

In Thursday's workout, we will have to have our mental A game on, and Saturday is a bit of a relief from the intervals, but dropping into aero base work.

Cheers,
Beth

  • Hi Elizabeth - love the T-shirt! I'm in the advanced plan, but am excited for the bike sessions! I'm about to get on the trainer and do this :)
  • Oh Ya! That's what SUCK is all about. Crazy heart rate at the end of the second 14". Was able to recover and get that run in. My knees were tired. Kinda weird.

Keep it up you sexy, sweaty, wind sucking monkeys!

  • Good job Jacklyn on getting your run in too! I couldn't due to time constraints, boo.
  • No snow here, but the wind was whipping. Repeated my favorite Sufferfest video. I don't "go with the attacks" so that I can complete the EN WKO. I bumped up my indoor numbers, and things got pretty uncomfortable. I like starting out with 10x 1' "Over-Under" (230w/220w) Intervals. They averaged out to IF of 1.0 as a was working off an FTP of 225w. Followed with 3x 8'(4') at 224w, 223w, an 226w. http://tpks.ws/nsqqD
  • Hey Team!
Apologies for being AWOL this week. It was crazy, crazy, crazy! We had the windstorm of all windstorms on Wednesday. The internet went first, then we lost power. My ENlings, Emma and Sara did not have school on Thursday, but I did get my Thurs bike in, in the dark, in the basement, bonus points, or just an extra banana? No power, no treadmill, no run. Friday, I went to Syracuse (80 miles east from Rochester) to help my mom with some medical appointments.

I did Saturday's bike today as I raced our local Running of the Green yesterday. I have been light on the road to continue rehabbing my knee and foot, and EN's training delivered! The 5 mile race was in brutally cold temperatures (below zero) and I wanted to run even 10's. I finished in 46.52 / 17 / 64 45-49 AG (Winner of AG was in 36:36. In this race, I will potentially podium when I am 65!). I am 7th from the left. Maybe I would have been faster without the head bopper and tutu? :)

Bike today went well despite being a little sore. Question for the group - how should we be gearing during MS? I had 4x8' (5' easy) and instead of staying in one gear, in two sets, I changed it up by cycling through the gears ladder style. Other two sets, I focused on keeping cadence between 80-85. Feedback welcome!

We are on deck for a nor'easter tomorrow morning through Wednesday. We are staying humble here in ROC!

@Elizabeth: Serious dedication in getting that ride done, Welome to the Jungle! And a race below zero in a tutu... FOS top honors for Week 5. Variable gear training is a mainstay of bicycle training. While triathlon involves more consistent cadence, inevitably, the race requires some variation. My cadence varies between 60 and 95! Some trainers adjust the resistance automatically, but changing up the gears is probably even more realistic training. You are adding a valuable aspect to your training.

Glad your foot is behaving. Forgot to respond last week: I run in Brooks Glycerin 14's and really like them. Although I'm neutral, my weight fluctuates between 190 and 200, so I need serious impact control... and I don't do Hokas!
  • This is week 6 but thought I'd add that I love Tuesdays (in a sick way). Not traveling this week so my intervals were done on schedule!
