George P - Badwater Cape Fear - 50 K
I am happy to report that my first ultra, Bad Water Cape Fear 50k, went off without a hitch. This happened because of, in my opinion, the great plan EN set up for me including the plan for the off-season. Thank you EN!!
I stayed in zone 1 for the first 12 miles of the race. People chatted with me and pulled away, but I knew that if I broke away from my game plan, I would be in serious trouble on the unforgiving 20-mile beach run. When I hit the beach, I allowed myself to float up to high zone 2 but never crested zone 3 for long. My plan worked!! I finished strong, and I passed some of the people who had cruised past me in the first part of the race. The training and the plan worked as I had hoped.
My nutrition also clicked on Saturday. I started off with a couple of bottles of Tailwind, switched to Nuun, had some nice juicy orange slices at the last 3 break stations along with a handful of pretzels at the last break and cup of coca-cola. I also had a Tapped Maple syrup gel that I brought with me and GU that sat in my stomach like a brick. Thanks to the cola for fixing it. lol
This was my first ultra, and I am extremely happy with my finish and would like to thank EN again for the great training plan and the RD of Bad Water and all of the nice people that I met on the course. You made this a great day for me!
Now onto Keys 50k in May!!
Beginning the 20 mile beach run
Great view of the course
10 miles to the end but a constant 15-20mph head wind

Did you meet Andy Glaze? He is my local friend that raced the 50 miler! He said the conditions were punishing, wind, deep sand, he had to dig deep to gut it out. Nice work finishing this one strong!
No, I only bumped into a a few 50 milers.
I am planning on returning next year already. This was such a nice race...I'm still on a high
the keys50k in May sounds like a hot one?
keep the progress and reports coming we have a small but growing group of Ultra Peeps in EN
Very excited to follow you on your path...next time we need to get you representing in an EN technical tee.
