2014 P5-Six Crank Question: GXP or BB30?

2014 P5-Six - putting a new crank on and there seems to be some question on which to put on: the GXP or the BB30, I am looking at buying the Wheels Mfg BBRight Outboard BB for use with 24/22mm, but which crank?  There seems to be different opinions on what is needed, just no true clear cut answer...anyone have experience with this issue?

That adaptor looks like it compensates for the extra distance of the BBright BB and adapts it to the GXP standard.

Drive Side Bearing: Enduro Angular Contact
        Non-Drive Side Bearing: Enduro ABEC-3
        Color: Black
Bottom Bracket/Frame Interface: BBRight™ Press Fit
        Bottom BracketShell Width (mm): 79mm
        Bottom Bracket Shell I.D.: 46mm
Crank Spindle Type: SRAM / Truvativ GXP
        Crank Spindle Diameter: 22/24mm
        Weight: 165g
        Packaged for retail display

So the BB you are looking at would fit any GXP crankset except for the older Quarqs which were based on the SRAM S9xx series of cranksets which were actually the correct width to fit into the BBright BB without an adaptor.

  • @attilamatyas   Thanks, so from what I gather would you say that the GXP is the better option?
  • Not necessarily better or worse just based on the  BB you mention the only crank that will fit into that BB will be a GXP crank.  BB30 is too short for the BBright since the BBright is 11mm wider on the non-drive side so if you tried using a BB30 crank it would be too short; unless it's one of the older SRAM S975 series that Quarq used for a long time.  Those cranks had the extra 11mm length on the spindle.

So if you have a GXP crankset sitting around then get the BB you mention and it will work fine.  If you are buying a new crankset then you can look for a native BBright crankset and forego any adaptors and just use the native PF30 cups.

Here are the list of native BBright cranksets:

And here is the list of compatible crankset with an adaptor:

I assume you have all the tools like the bearing press to remove and press the new cups in.  If not I would highly suggest you take it to a shop and just have them do it.  I find the BBright to be a royal pain and getting the cups just perfect without squeaking later down the road can be a challenge.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.
  • HUGE help!  Thanks.  I am not going to do it myself, if there is one thing I have learned over the years, tinker with what you know but have the pros do what they do best!  Thanks again...
