I won a Quarq, but what bike do I put it on???

File this under good problems to have!  I was the lucky winner of a new Quarq PM during the Tour of Sufferlandria earlier this year.  Score!!!!  I can choose the model/specs so pretty much it will work on any of my 3 bikes.  BUT- here's the rub, all 3 bikes already have a PM in some form.  So I need some help deciding what makes the most sense.  Here are the details.

TT Bike: Felt DA with 650 wheels with a Powrtap Pro+.  BUT, it's got a frankenstein Cobb/DuraAce crank to give me a 155 crank.  There are no Quarq PM's in 155 size, so that's pretty much out right away.

Road Bike:  Trek Domane with SRAM Red cranks, 165 crank arms and a 700c custom (ie, pretty white flat spokes to match the bike) wheels with a Powertap G3 built in.  The only reason to put the Quarq here would be if I thought Quarq would be superior to the G3.  If I went this route I'd be selling the PT Wheels and buying a new set.

Cyclocross Bike:  Cannondale SuperSix with an FSA crank and 170 Stages FSA crank arm.  Two sets of wheels cause I ride this as my road/cross/adventure/short Tri/ whatever bike.  It's the only bike I bring to Florida because it's my "do everything" bike.  I'm leaning on putting the Quarq here, getting myself shorter crank arms (165) and selling the Stages crank???  The one down side to this plan is that this bike is a little older with center pull brakes and had been thinking of getting a new bike to replace it with disk brakes.  That means being "stuck" with a BB30 Bottom Bracket on any new bike decision.  Should I be worried about that?

Any thoughts from the team?

That was my original plan when I assumed I wouldn't have much of an option with the specs.
  • @Nemo Brauch first CONGRATS on winning the Quarq!  Any excuse for a new bike probably bubbles to the top of my list, but you may have more discipline than me. :D    I have Powertap P1's, and have been researching (eg. dcrainmaker site) adding crank pm.  Are you saying your "stuck with BB30" because of the new Quarq? .... cuz it looks like their dzero sram red is available in gxp and bb30.

  •  Um, Yeah- my answer is buy a new TT to go with your Quarq!

That's a good question and I probably wasn't clear enough with my description.  My current Cross bike (and the Trek for that matter) has a BB30.  I've been thinking of upgrading the Cross bike to get one with disc brakes, but wasn't really ready to pull the trigger on that just yet.  So my concern was if order the Quarq with the BB30 for the cross bike, that when I'm eventually shopping for a new bike I'd have limited options (assuming I wanted to move the Quarq to the new bike).  I had thought BB30's were kinda old school and not used much anymore, but I did a few quick searches yesterday and perhaps I was wrong on that point.

@Leslie Knight Ah- no replacing Fawkes the TT anytime soon- I actually still really like that bike.  Plus, Quarq doesn't offer a 155 crank, and no matter what TT bike I buy, I'm gonna want that short crank arm.

The more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards putting it on the Cross bike and selling the Stages crank (or hanging onto it for when I eventually sell the Cross bike and upgrade to a new one).
  • Just updating with my final decision.  The guy at Quarq has been super helpful answering my questions about compatibility with future bike choices and is also sending  crank arms in GXP format and an 8-bolt combination tool to help make any future change easy. So I'll end up with a package of stuff that can go right on my current bike, or get used on the replacement when that happens.  Now I can take a little time deciding on if I want to go with 11x1 or not!  That probably deserves it's own new thread!
  • @Nemo Brauch Hey before you really decide....... I have a perfect bike to put on and then you won't have to worry which of yours to ..... Heehee!!!
  • @Nemo Brauch I gotta say that @Scott Dinhofer really paid it forward with his move in "gifting" to me. I have yet to mount it as I mentioned to him, but I am forever grateful for his "gift"! He just doesn't know how beneficial it will be!!!
  • Ah @Trent Prough , for you I might make an exception :-)
