Jim Ebert Needs Your Wisdom & Council

At 70, I now have been told I have arthritis, bursitis, torn meniscus, and bone spurs on my left knee. I will be seeing a sports ortho specialist when I get home in NC next week. Ortho drs in FL have said I can bike and swim which I plan to. I haven't scheduled any aqua-bikes or century rides waiting for input from the sports ortho dr I'll see when back in NC. I hope I am able to get back to tris using speed walking or something like that. I did finish my 2016 IMMD walking about 4.5 mph. I have knee compression sleeves and a Rx of 800 mg ibuprofen but plan to use it during races as I can usually walk with minimal limp. I hope to schedule two aquabikes, a century ride, two favorate 5Ks,and maybe one oly tri later in the year ( & nat'l senior games 500 swim and sprint tri in 2018). What do you suggest for a training plan I can use this season. I appreciate you and Brenda calling me recently to get me going again.

  • Hey Jim,

Patrick has written a new Aquabike training training plan. I recommend you use that training plan and then work with Patrick in the Micro Forum here to discuss adding some walking to it to prepare you for walking the Ironman marathon.
  • I've downloaded the AB training plan and need to begin more walking. I know I need to average a bit over 4 mph to finish in 8 hours ( I did a little better than that in the 2016 IMMD to finish). I may be able to get up to 6mph but I'l only do that if the ortho Dr. says  OK  I'm looking for a good ortho/sports Dr. in the NC or VA area. My regular Dr. will have me going to sports PT to get some moves to keep my left leg strong. I'll let Patrick know.
