Jims "Get Fixed" Plan

Patrick, I'm working to deal with a left knee having arthritis, bursitis, torn meniscus, and bone spurs. From Richs advice to micro you I told him, "I've downloaded the AB training plan and need to begin more walking. I know I need to average a bit over 4 mph to finish in 8 hours ( I did a little better than that in the 2016 IMMD to finish). I may be able to get up to 6mph but I'l only do that if the ortho Dr. says  OK  I'm looking for a good ortho/sports Dr. in the NC or VA area. Just doing alternatives for now (yoga, tai chi, vits/mins, etc.) My regular Dr. will have me going to sports PT to get some moves to keep my left leg strong."

I plan to tell my Ortho Dr (when I have one). I plan on doing 2-3 AquaBikes and shorted tris for a while. I'd like to try another IM when I'm at the bottom of the 75-80 AG. So I have three more years for that. After that some ABs and short tris. No real planning beyond that. At my age I feel it would be foolish. And I don't really have good Ortho Dr. suggestions yet. I'm hearing there's little improvement with ortho surgery or NSIDs(!?)

  • @jim ebert - Thanks for the update. You are really on the cutting edge of athletics at your age, so there isn't a ton of relevant data / experience. I think that you are right to take running off the table at this point, but I'd like to hear from you what options you have for alternative modalities if they exist, so please let me know.
    • Water Running
    • Elliptical
    • Rowing Machine
I say all of that ^above^ not really know what it's like to deal with your situation and the confluence of issues you have right now. So please take all of my input with a grain of salt.

In terms of keeping the fires going from an endurance perspective...if cycling is still an option, what challenges can you line up / choose that will keep you riding long and maintaining that fitness? Maybe just one or two really (cheaper than triathlons!).

And of course, regular swimming...which you will get in the AB plan.

Good luck with your ortho search!

  • Coach,  I'm schedule to see a top ortho dr. who specializes in what can be done other than knee replacement. He has a good reputation. My goal is several ABs this season and maybe a short tri (depending on the ortho Dr. suggestions). And aim for an IM when I reach the next AG. After that ABs and short tris depending on my health. I'm going to a sports PT to get some particular exercises to strengthen  a knee with my issues. I have x-rays and and MRI to help them figure out  what is best. EN AB training til it's settled. I'll keep ya in the loop.
  • @jim ebert -  sounds like a plan! What are the most important things you can do as you go through this process is continue your fitness. It will keep you strong, sane (!) and help with any future specific exercises you need to do.

I appreciate you sharing the journey, I look forward to the updates!
