New TT Bike Setup and Pictures
Not that my bike or I are ready but I got the urge to race earlier this week so I signed up for a local sprint triathlon at the last minute. Therefore I quickly got the bike ready to race and took a few pictures and figured I would share.
Here is the fit info if anyone is interested. If you are going to be switching bikes I highly recomend reading everything you can about stack/reach and the fit system over at slowtwitch and then measure your fit on the current bike and set up the new one the same. Makes it a very very easy process to changes bikes. I'm now in exactly the same position in the aero bars as I was for IMWI last year. I wanted to try and ride with closer to 16cm of drop this year like I did at clearwater but my hamstrings didn't think that was a good idea. If all goes well I will probably get down to 14.5 or 15 cm by Oct. I'm 5'8" so I consider anything over 15cm to be a ton of drop.
A: Saddle height | 753 |
B: Plumb line, saddle nose to BB | +15 |
C: Cockpit (nose to extension tip) | 800 |
Armrests to extension tip | 382 |
E: Armrests drop | -135 |
F: Saddle nose to armrest back | 435 |
G: Armrest width | 175 |
A few thoughts I will share within the haus:
- I can't tell the difference between SRAM Red, Force and Rival other than weight and cost. Rival is an awesome deal and works great.
- I love the R2C shifters - the front one was a ***** to setup and took longer to get dialed in then building the rest of the bike, but now that it works it is awesome. The rear one worked perfect from the start.
- The disc is fun to ride, but unless you have a hook up to get one, stick with a wheel cover and save the money.
- The Ordu looks much better in person than in pictures and love the way it rides. Definitely more comfortable then (but maybe not as stiff as) the Argon I was on last year.
- I had my seat all the way forward and was as steep as possible on the Argon, but with the Ordu I have a ton more adjustability thanks to the crazying looking seatpost. In the picture the seat angle is around 80 and there is 5+ cm I could go further forward
- If you are like me and have chain dropping issues because you cross chain too much, buy a chain catcher. You will be very happy you spent the $30.
- Still love the Quarq Cinqo / Garmin Edge 500 combo and have been using it since decemeber without issue.
I know the cables and housings need some attention, but I want to get the fit dialed first. I'm likely going to put a 1 cm longer stem on and move the elbow pads and extensions back. Also, the bottle cage on the downtube is coming off this weekend for the spirnt tri and I will have an aero bottle or speedfill there for longer races.
Thannks to Trent I have some nice EN stickers for the bike and helmet since I can't wear the kit.
Questions or comments are welcome
My reminder on the top tube not to be Ricky Racer
For the computer mount - This time I used part of an aero bar extention, cut it ti fit and then drilled two holes so I could zipp tie it in place. The water bottle change is simply attached via three zipp ties.
Just like her father Abigail is much more happy in (ok on) the aero bars then sitting up in the seat.
And here is the old road bike with a few updates for the year:

Hot!
This little local sprint only has 400 people, but I know at least one local pro that will be there for sure ... and the dude is way faster than me (like consistantly runs very low 15 min 5Ks) so I need every second I can get just to at least finish in the same zip code.
What is out of control is I have to start in the last wave since I just signed up this this week
Hey Matt,
I ride with 2 guys who were 1st and 2nd overall at Twin Lakes last year (Mike Stec and Eligio Pimentel). They said that the bike course is slow because it winds through residential neighborhoods and since it's draft legal people tend to stay together on the bike. They described it as a runner's race. You have the right strategy to put as much time into the field on the bike.
I had to refund my slot because I'll be in San Diego. Wish I was doing it too.
Good luck.
Hey Matt ... Twin Lakes is draft legal??? Wow I can't believe they would allow that for safety reasons, but I guess it is easier than trying to marhsall it.
Glad you told me as my race strategy may change for that race. Since I'm a slow swimmer this may be interesting. I may not be strong enough to catch up to the lead pack if they are all working together. Either way it will be a good workout for my 100% slowtwitch muscles and thats why I'm doing it.
This weekend I'm going to do Lake in the Hills. I know nothing about it so I'm just going to push until I blow up or finish...which ever comes first.
I was really surprised myself. I only found out from talking to people who have done it before. You'd think they would advertise it a bit more since it's so unusual.
Good luck at Lake in the Hills!
Awesome bikes! And your daughter sure is getting big already. Very cute!
Good luck in the race. Hard to believe you could be passing 390 some people.
After you said you met the RD who runs the Biggest and Smallest Tri races in Illinois I looked into volunteering with my older daughter since it seemed the RD could use the help, but we have to leave to take her to Camp tomorrow so the timing just did not fit. Have a great race!!
Very nice ride and setup. i have to say though Abigail looks cuter. Time does fly--she going to be beatin daddy before you know it!! ha, ha!
Is that the 808 with your wheel cover on the rear? I haven't put mine on yet and wondered how easy it was.
WOW!
Very cool. What brand of cage are you using on the aerobars?
Thanks Everyone!
@Trent, that is a 900 Disc. I'm sure the wheel cover is very easy to put on an 808 though as it was very easy to do with my FP60.
@Dave, the Trek bat cage. You can get them from any Trek dealer for about $10 and because of the shape there are many places you can put the zipp ties to get it to work on the aerobars
One more picture I forgot. X/B1 for others to see when they are putting out 400 watts passing me up a hill and then again when I pass them during the decent!
So is that your water bottle setup for Kona? No Speedfill?
I think the coolest part of the very cool setup is the seat post. Never seen such a thing before. Can you flip it to get more forward?
Also I like the idea of measuring out the bike fit for future reference. Does ST have pictures to show exactly how to measure? Are there other measurements we should be concerned about?
Thanks!
tom
Really creative work with the computer mount! I'd love to see a close up of the water bottle mounted on the aerobars with the zipp ties. I'm still considering going that route and ditching the Profile bottle. But I can't seem to figure out exactly how you've done it.
Oh- and the front on pic cracked me up. For some reason the shifters look like the bike is giving me the middle finger with both "hands"! HA!
PS- Chain Catcher is on order :-)
Daddy get your paws of my bike, go get your own
Nemo, I don't know if this is quite what Matt has, but here's what I did:
Lay the bottle holder horizontally over the stem and run a zip tie or two around your stem and through the back piece of the holder (the part that you'd normally screw into the frame).
Then take one zip tie, thread it through the side of the bottle holder and loop it around one aerobar; repeat with the other side.
That's it. The only problem I had was over tightening the zip tie on the first aerobar because then it distorts the shape of the bottle holder and makes it hard to get the bottle in. You have to make sure each side zip tie has equal tension so that you maintain the shape.
@Tom - there is a series of articles on Slowtwitch that explain the FIST system and fitting process. From those you can figure out how to do the measurements. If you have a ST username just go to your profile and you can store your fit info there for all your bikes. http://www.slowtwitch.com/Bike_Fit/...index.html
@Nemo - I'm testing out a new stem at the moment but once I put the bike back together I can take pictures. For all preacticial purposes though Suzanne has the same setup. The only difference is I loop the top two zip ties around the base bar instead of the aerobar arm rest mounts. It works the same either way though, just depends on how your aerobars are setup.
@Suzanne - thanks for sharing
