At the 24hr Fitness near my office, where I swim before each of my Tue/Thu bike rides, there's the pool and two sauna rooms with a open shower in between.
Why does that shower always smell like pee?
I won't walk barefoot ANYWHERE in a gym, always wear flip flops, at least.
This thread is too funny. So glad I haven't run into anything like that at our gym. I asked John about guys using the dryer to dry their bits. He said "yup." ICK!
I don't know how on earth this thread could ever die with all the weird and totally rude stuff that's out there.
Any way...another one from the men's room at 24hr fitness for you...
Bench, about two feet above the ground. An older man, standing on top of the bench to get to the top row of lockers. Did I mention he was butt naked standing on the bench?
I walked in from the pool area looking down, then brought my head up right in time to see his sagging arse at just about my eye-level. YIKES, I think I got blinded!!!

Oh I know how, right Dave Boyle? ;-)
I thought of this thread today. Finished my shower and walked into the locker room wrapped in my towel to find an older (grandma age) woman sitting on the bench next to a young boy (grandson?). Now this boy was roughly 9 or 10? And I'm thinking, hmmmmmmm at what age is it no longer appropriate to bring your young son into the ladies room? They are apparently just sitting there waiting for Mom to finish up in the toilet before heading into the pool. Hmmmmm, why don't you just go on into the pool? After a few minutes of pretending to re-arange everything in my gym bag I'm just about to grab my cloths and walk to a bathroom stall when Mom finally returns and they all head out to the pool together. It was, um, awkward.
I used to be a member of a gym that will go unnamed (hint: starts with a Y). They charged $5 per month for towel use. This policy led to towels being optional in the gym, resulting in gross soaked sweaty equipment everywhere. It also resulted in naked dudes sitting everywhere on everything. People didn't want to pay for the towel usage and didn't bring their own towels, so they would just walk around naked to air dry. In the 4 months or so that I was a member there I never saw less than 5 naked dudes at a time just walking aimlessly in the locker room. According to my wife, the same situation occurred in the ladies locker room. We were both a bit too weirded out and cut off the membership after those few months.
I'm sure alot of them just forgot to bring a towel. I guess it is feasible to forget considering most gyms have tons of towels for patron use. I definitely think that the air dry alternative isn't a valid choice though.
My favorite has to be the 9 year old kid in the womens' locker room. That is just out of control.
But, I think I complained about lack of personal grooming... which I think goes hand in hand with what you observed - otherwise I just can't imagine why such a despicable deed would be necessary. Ugh... totally gross.

@Nemo: 9 or 10?!?!?!?!?! WTF? You don't let a little boy in the women's locker room after they've reached age 5. 9 or 10? You gotta be kidding me!!!
What Al said, I don't sit down, ever
Seriously!? I consider getting a towel at the gym a super luxury.

Just when you thought this thread was dead...www.youtube.com/watch
I think they're field testing it for the big day. Odds we'll actually see it Feb 6th?
Good Question! Something else for us all to lay bets on
I finally witnessed the use of the gym's communal hair dryers to dry the hair "down there." I will never touch a gym hair dryer again. Ever.
Even in Lincoln Park, I am not safe from gym trauma.
@Beth - gasp. The Horror.
