Bike wheels on a plane

if I want to fly with an extra set of race wheels , what's my best option - luggage vs carry-on, soft case / hard case etc.  I'm not worried about extra luggage fees.

  • Carry on won't fly.  Having taco-ed wheels arrive after using a soft, unpadded case, I would say hardshell.   Heck ... I think a good two-layer cardboard box would be superior to a wheel bag.
  • My first bike box was two boxes my husband made from a regular bike box. He cut it down to fit the wheels in one and the bike in another. Both were small enough in their dimensions that they counted as regular luggage. Arrived perfectly healthy every time.
  • I'm thinking I'll go buy a hard sided suitcase at a discount store and stick the wheel in there with some clothes etc.
