Bike Hill Training

How should one approach getting stronger riding hills? I know the basic answer is to ride more hills. However my question is how one should actually ride each of those hills? i.e. push constantly beyond ftp, stay within the race plan guidelines or?

Thanks.

  • Nevermind - I did a search and found some great advice. The consensus seems to be to train the way we race.
  • Since joining EN, I'm learning better how to train on routes which include hills (just about every route around here), by just riding at the prescribed power, no matter the slope. The effect, of course, is I go slower uphill than on the flats. The harder part is getting up to a high enough power going DOWN hill sometimes. The 300 foot, 6-12% hills here make good spots for FTP intervals of 5-8 minutes in length, with a resting phase on the downhill.

The short answer to your question, of course, is "raise your FTP and/or w/kg." And the subtext for us over 60 is that, no matter what we do, we won't have the same snap up hills that's possible for a 25 y/o.
