2nd-ever tri - 1st AG, 8th/157 overall!
I'm a tri-noob in shock here LOL. Although I started training for triathlons last fall with the goal of being competitive, I've never been an athlete before in my life, let alone a competitive one. Yesterday I raced my second-ever tri (the first was one week earlier), the Westfield Wave Sprint .3/13/3. I felt like I'd run a strong race, but I didn't really have a good sense of how many people had finished ahead of me, especially since there was a super-sprint race on the course at the same time. So imagine my shock when the first page of results was posted - I had won my 11-person AG (M45-49), and was 8th overall out of 157!
I wasn't expecting to hit this milestone so early, and it's really messing with my self-concept (in a good way). Still, I console myself that I still have lots of room for improvement, not to mention longer distances to work up to.
Swim: 11:01, 2nd AG, 32nd overall - have to learn how to sight without stopping, at least I didn't go way off course like last week
Bike: 36:53, 2nd AG, 8th o/a, Norm Power 217 vs FTP 220 - I look forward to seeing what this'll look like next year after an OS of FTP work
Run: 22:09, 3rd AG, 17th o/a, NGP 6:59 vs. my pre-injury TP of 6:25 - haven't got my full run mojo back yet, but close!
T1+T2: 1:32, 1st AG, 7th o/a - this was my secret weapon LOL, the rest of my AG absolutely sucked at transitions; not that this will make much difference on longer distances but I gained 1, 2, even 3 minutes on my competition here, talk about free speed!
Lessons learned: 1) Make sure the valve cover decal is securely adhered to the wheel cover. 2) Practice-practice-practice replacing the water bottle in the downtube cage, so as to avoid dropping it on the course after the first drink.
Edited to add: How could I forget, we were honored to have Team Hoyt racing this event with us. Wow, simply wow.

Awesome...so fun to podium!

Nice!
Nice job!!!
and don't feel bad about the water bottle, I'm 7 tris in and still don't have that dialed in yet (but made a great stride this past weekend)... a lifesaver for me has been the aquacell between my aerobars. That's practically idiot-proof.
Ooops - now you're hooked! Prepare to enter the rabbit hole into obsession with the work and details needed to move up the ladder, which always has more rungs than you can see from below.
Awesome! Nice work!
Al, I have a sneaking suspicion that your down-the-rabbit-hole/up-the-ladder metaphor will prove true...
And after reading all the forum posts here, I'm going to try switching the water bottle to a torpedo mount between the aerobars; if that works for me, then next year I'll try adding a Speedfil holding nutrition for the HIM races.
You're all a real inspiration, and I look forward to meeting some of you in person next year at whichever HIM's I end up doing in the Northeast.
Wow! What a way to start your tri career. Congrats and enjoy basking the glow of your victory!
