Nils Stenvig Year One Coach Thread

Here's your personal Coach Thread, as promised. This is where you'll return to post all your "coach" questions as responses; I'll see them and reply. This first post is here to guide you through your first year on EN, so you can always come back here.

As you'll see in this forum, I handle all manner of edits and changes.  So post away, know that I reply here usually M/W/F each week.

Power User Tip: Click the Star icon by the Title of this thread to subscribe, and you'll get email updates when I do reply.

Your WHY and Goals

Coming soon...see homework below!

Your Notes

Just turned 31. I took the 2017 year off from racing, due to birth of our first child, a move across country to Tennessee, and start of a new career. My last IM race was Wisconsin, 2016. I also did IMWI in 2013 and 2015.

I've not done much training to speak of since last year. I've done a fair amount of indoor cycling and outdoor mountain biking. I had some achilles pain that kept me from doing much running, though it's improved significantly at this point. I've swam a handful of times this year. On an average week right now I'm: Biking 2-4 times per week, total of 2 to 5 hours
Running 3 to 5 times per week, all short runs of 5 miles or less
Swimming once per week

Races

  • 09/23/2018 - IM Chattanooga **2018 placeholder (A)
  • 11/04/2018 - IM Florida 2018 (B)

Coach Notes

Thanks for reaching out, especially so far in advance. And congratulations to you on the birth of your child.

I'm glad you have stayed active if only to stay sane! :D seriously though, and Stepping away from being active for a long time means that you've got a long way to go when you come back. Even the low level of activity such as yours can help.

That said, we need to think about how we're going to handle the rest of this year. I don't know what your bandwidth looks like for the rest of this season, but I encourage you to sign up for a half marathon. This will help you run with the intent, and give you a bit of a purpose. I don't want you to go nuts with the mileage given your Achilles, we just need some direction.

In addition, it would be great if you could get out for one or two longer rides before the weather changes. I find that they always are nice benchmarks to have… And since you moved, there might be a new century or course that is appealing to you. Exploring is always fun!

From a macro level we would be doing more consistent running and dialing in a good run frequency program for you. I'd like to get you into the gym or doing something at home with strength for a few weeks before we start the OutSeason®. I don't see you starting the AL season until January, unless you pick up an early-season half that speeds things up.
