Hy-Vee Triathlon RR
Hy-Vee triathlon is a pretty large tri around the Des Moines metro area. It is hosted along side a weekend of racing that culminates with some ITU cup races with big purses. While it doesn't always fit the best with some of my training I have only missed this race once is the 4 years it has been held. I felt horrible for missing it so I always attempt to fit it into my schedule even if I do it as a cool event/C-race
After KS I was pretty shelled all week. Swam a couple of times, ran once and didn't ride at all. Took my transition week before the IMLOU build.
Race day this was supposed to be an olympic distance race. The organizers realized we had a large thunderstorm rolling and made the call to switch it to a sprint 400 swim, 20k bike, 5k run. Met Hayes Sanborn at the bike check in and was able to hook him and some others up with good VIP parking so they didn't have to take the shuttle buses.
Swim- Time trial start, don't know why it took me 9:08 since it was so uneventful
Bike out and back flat course with a couple of decent 2 minute climbs as well as about 3 minutes of what I would call administrative riding to get off a bike trail and onto the highway, the race organizers asked we make this a no pass zone, it just wasn't an area you could really open it up. Bike was uneventful. I think I was passed by only two guys a guy who ended up 3rd in the AG and grew up literally across the street from me as well as another guy I caught on the run. I just tried to sit at about 285 watts my FTP.

Run felt awesome passed a ton more people including some in my age group. Tough to say how much it helped my actual placing since it ended up being a time trial start. Splits were 6:00, 6:17, 5:47 a couple of hills slowed me down in that second mile

Nice peak 30 min work!!
Very nice times and stats!! You are one fast doode! HyVee is on my list for races....maybe next year.
The one downside is that the hoopla around it is almost IM-like. They have a mandatory (and they mean it) briefing you have to attend on Saturday, and there is Saturday bike checkin. The race starts at 6:00 a.m., so it's a short night as well.
That said, it's a great way to spend the weekend. There's a series of kids/youth events each year, and last year they had a pro-relay event in addition to the normal pro ITU event...plus the men's event last year had half a dozen guys finish within literally just a few seconds of one another...quite exciting!
It was nice meeting you and thanks for the parking pass! We'll be back next year and maybe I can give you a run for your money...I Just need to swim, bike and run faster
Great race!
Dan,
Fantasticperformance at the race... Thanks you VERY much for the parking option. It was so much nicer than riding my bike with all the gear 5 miles back to the athlete parking.
I'm glad they decided to shorten the event so almost everyone was safely off the bike course before the torrential downpour with lightning started. I was about 1 mile into the run when the announcer said: "The really bad weather is coming in 5 minutes, all athletes and specators please take shelter IMMEDIATELY!" Definitely a hoot for those of us with 2.1 miles to go. We laughed until the rain came.
Hayes and I seem to pick weather challenged races. HyVee reminded me of our Effingham HIM last year. Both had a special running course sound effects. In Effingham it was 90 degrees bright and sunny on the run course and you kept hearing footsteps like someone was sneaking up on you, looked around, no one there---- The sound was the melted blacktop sucking at your own heels. At HyVee I could hear runners "squish- squishing" their soggy shoes as we rolled through the streams of water sluicing the course.
Definitely be back for my 5th HyVee next year. I'm looking forward to sharing another interesting race with everyone.
On to High Cliff HIM with Mancona next weekend....
