AHR off the bike

Coach P,
Having a tough time getting a handle on the AHR off the bike in my race sim days. It has been hot (like everywhere) here in SW Montana along with smoke from fires in our state and surrounding states. So regardless of route I ride my AHR is about 125 on the rides while keeping about 18 mph along with the fact I don't feel as if I am riding that hard but when I get off to run (usually hot, trying to simulate ICDA) my HR is 131-33 then shoots into 140 while my pace goes down. TRP pace is 9:17, Z1 10:00, Z2 8:35 and I do try and hit those marks in the training runs but do have to go with perceived effort as I have mostly hills in the area. So am I on track or am I missing something, either in training or knowledge. Thank you for your help

  • @Dave Legg -  it's important to note that the bike is definitely easier than a run. However, as your bike reaches the six hour mark, your heart rate does begin to rise overtime. Not that it will equal what you normally see on the run, but it's pretty close to what you are able to sustain always stay during the marathon.

There are two  potential things happening here. It's possible your bike fitness is much lower than your run fitness.  The words, you're easy on the bike does not come close to matching you're easy on the run. I'm not sure how your tests have fallen or if you are truly holding back a bit much on the bike, only you know that.

The air-quality or dehydration could also be affecting you on the run. We don't notice these problems when cycling because of the speed at which we are traveling and the fixed System of cycling that makes effort allocation much easier.

Air-quality is what it is, but are you peeing on those rides? In other words, are you getting enough fluid? If not, it's possible your exiting the bike not hydrated enough, leading to an already elevated heart rate.

Aside from checking that stuff above, I suggest you plan on walking 30 seconds of every mile like you will on race day. That will help get your heart rate under control and will hopefully delay This HR acceleration.
  • Coach P,
I think I am going to lean towards the possibility of not being hydrated enough on the bike as it has always seemed to be a problem as I think on it. I seem to ride and I really do enjoy the bike and forget I guess for the lack of a better word to drink. I focus on it and still don't have a handle on it. I have done the sweat test and ride tests did not do the last run test because I was happy with my zone times and felt I still had some work to do with those. I have 240z water bottles and can get thru one and half most times in a little over an hour which as I write this is not enough. So how do I change this? What can I do to drink more? Taking all ideas, need the help or I am going to train wreck this run
