A Glimpse Into the Future?

Coach, I am using as much of the EN Aquabike training program as possible. I got another X-ray last week and it shows the interior knob of my thigh and calf bones are touching. No more meniscus keeping them apart. My left knee will get a partial knee replacement on August 21st (I'm told, since I'm 70, unlikely I'll be doing any running anymore. but so far speed walking is OK...like I did to finish IMMD in 2016...I'll have to see how long that's doable). I've been seeing a physical therapist for the past 4 weeks and have a 15 part strengthening program to complete each day. I am told I will have a PT come to my home for 4 weeks after the operation and part of their duties is to manage my pain medication (I'm good and taking pain but am told don't waste energy like that since I should heal better if not fighting pain). Sounds reasonable. Since I'm not 400 lbs and use EN training he expects I will be able to do recreational bike riding hopefully after 2 weeks, but swimming may take longer since there is a fear of infection if the stitches are hurt in swimming. If unable to do much sport training, hopefully I can do strength training. I'll keep you and the team informed as I move forward.

  • @jim ebert - Bionic Jim has a nice ring to it. Your fitness will help but you'll need to apply your focus to the rehab. It will be harder than you think, but then again you are really good at doing hard things!!!

    plse do keep us posted!!

  • Coach, I talked with a guy who works out at my Y. He's a 70 YO run who had a partial knee replacement last December. We talked about an hour. He gave me lots of good info. He did a half marathon in April but did it with a walk/run per mile. We'll keep in touch. I'll keep you posted.
  • @jim ebert - that is fantastic news. I know your surgery is coming up in less than two weeks… I hope you are ready!
  • Coach, I've been on google and YouTube to see partial knee operations, info about my orthopedic surgeon, and what pain I may have after surgery and how to limit that. I will have physical therapists daily for 4 weeks. I've read and watched what exercises they might have me doing and I've been  keeping up daily on the PT exercises I've already been given. Next week my wife Jarie I attend a required class at the Sentara Leigh Hospital to prepare me for the operation. I've already had pre-operation lab work done and will see my regular doctor next week to tell me all look good and I've already checked them out online. I'll be ready.
  • Coach, Had my partial knee replacement 6 weeks ago. noted more in 50s and crushing it. i have PT for 12 weeks. ends mid December. Ortho Dr said bike at 6 weeks outside if you must but act like you are just starting training. An accident on regular legs is bad...don't let that happen to you he said. I have a 47 mile bike event in 2 weeks and should be ready. It isn't a race, just an event to raise money for local help groups. Signed up last week for a cross country bike tour in the spring of 2018, with 2 other seniors with knee operations. Signed up this week for a HITS sprint in Naples Fl in early January. I usually did their half...but I want to take it easy. Over doing may have had something to do with the need for my replacement. Need to do three tris in 2018  to get into the 2019 Summer Senior Nationals being held in New Mexico. We'll see.

    GOOD LUCK IN KONA!!
  • @jim ebert - you are the definition of unstoppable!!! Congratulations on the surgery and do ALL THE HOMEWORK related to recovery and self care. I love the cycling focus for you, but go easier than you want at first...your fitness will come back quickly without forcing it, I know.

    Onwards!!!
