  • Jeez man. I balked at doing it on a bike.

at mile 6 on that you go from up 1153' in .8 mile...
could not imagine doing 25+ trips on that climb!!!
  • Why is it soooooo expensive? $1K per day for the "cheap" version. Guessing I could fly to Nepal for that price.

I actually just clicked on the link now.. why is it expensive? Because it's stratton, the Hoi Poloi of Vermont Mtns, evern worse than Stowe was before Vail bought it (believe it or not Stowe is now cheaper to ski than it was under prior management)
  • I think the key benefit of Stratton is "take the gondola back down"!

I've got the perfect place to do this near me as well - 1200 gain over about 1.5 trail miles.  Climb that 24 times and it's only 36 miles of walking. BUT WAIT that's only for the up hill!  How do you get back down?

That same climb can be shortened to end at a fire road so with a crew, you could climb the hill to the road and then get a ride back to the bottom.  It would mean a few more miles of walking, I think, but it would eliminate the down hill and it would give you a rest during the drive back to the start.

    Mile 5.7 here - https://www.strava.com/activities/1030446636/overview

Still seems crazy, but I could be talked into it...

    Because, this guy:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Itzler

He's a serial entrepreneur who dabbles in ultras - founded Marquis Jet, a coconut water deal, was rapper Jesse Jaymes in a previous life, married the founder of Spanx, and is a part owner of the Atlanta Hawks. Looks like he basically rented the mountain for the weekend to have a little fun, and wants to cover that cost by conning some wannabes into glamping and tramping.

We could do this on the cheap in Snowmass during the summer - we've got a 1500' vertical rise gondola which runs 7 hrs/day and a nice HOUSE (not a tipi/tent) to rest up @ night. Or you could walk up 3300' a pop on Aspen mountain and ride the gondola down.
  • You guys are freaks.

    Al Camp Part Deux!
  • Al camp Part Deux......Fall edition? with mountain biking & ending in an "Everest hike"
  • Yeah, the gondolas are running weekends through September...no camp this year, as my wife will be there with me, and I don't think she'd take kindly to a full bore Al Camp filled with sweaty dirty mountain biker/trail runners. Maybe 2018? A combined pre-Kona camp for those who KQ, and consolation mountain biking and trail running for those who don't...
  • Good lord; my girlfriend is a mountain runner; loves Vertical ascents... wait till I show her this....too bad she has a fractured femur...maybe next year ...definitely not for me
  • This is very interesting.... Coming from a guy who failed at the Everest on a bike attempt... However having 24hrs over 3 days to complete sure makes it seem a bit more reasonable... Have mixed feelings about taking Gondola's down , after all there are no rides down to anyone who summits Everest and they must descend on their own power....
  • you guys should go do the barkley marathons already. Then you get to everest TWICE!
