What are your night time rituals before a big event?

As I bite off bigger and bigger events. I am finding that I don't sleep well the night before at all. Just wondering what others have found to help them settle down and rest. I do know that melatonin has the opposite effect on me.

  • I actually don't have any special rituals.  I try to do the same routine I do every night just a few hours earlier.  I try to get 30 mins extra sleep each night starting 3-5 days prior to race day.  Then I'm not too worried if I get a bad night's sleep the night before race day.
  • For me it's my attitude in regards to the night before sleep.  I know that the night before the night before is much more important sleep wise.  If I can get a good nights sleep two nights before race day then I don't worry at all about the night before a race.  I assume I will get a bad nights sleep.  Then any sleep I get that night is a bonus!
    • Jamba Juice (or other liquid dinner)
    • Music: Free form a new playlist on the fly while lying down about 8:30-9:30 PM
    • Go to bed at my regular time (10:38 PM, +/-) - this avoids lying there unable to sleep exposed to worries.
  • Thanks guys! Appreciate the insight.
  • Definitely early to bed.

Ritual dinner around 6pm:  cheese pizza/salad and a glass of wine

bedtime:  listen to an audiobook around 8pm. Gives my brain other things to think about instead of my own thoughts.  Usually puts me to sleep fairly quickly even with race nerves. (Cutting caffeine race week also helps!!).
  • I usually eat dinner around 4 pm and go to bed at 8.   I don't have any rituals.
