Garmin 310XT HELP

Did my race sim at Lake Placid on Friday and of course, the workout doesn't transfer onto Garmin Connect (and hopefully onto WKO+ for analysis) - every other workout transfers but not this one - does anyone know why or what I have to do to get the info. -- I don't have WKO+ but will get it (can info go right from 310XT to that program?) - thanks for any help in advance

  • Just saw this.

The activity may have gotten corrupted - there's a thread on the garmin forums that you can post your 'bad' FIT file and they can try to recover the data.

    Hope that helps.
  • I know this wont help you know, but did you do a reset after you finished the workout? With the new .fit file format the file is not complete until the device is reset. In theory when you turn the device off the file is also completed, but that doesn't seem to always work. Therefore it is best if after you finish a workout you hold down the reset key for 3 seonds to complete the file.
  • Hi Joe, I have a 310 XT and have had lots of issues with it, however, the support people from Garmin are very very helpful and will give you lots of time and attention to get through any kinks. Once in a while that has happened to me and never quite sure, sometimes if I put on my heart rate strap and the garmin indoors it "turns off" the GPS so then when I do a race or a workout (absolutely devasating during a race) it won't have any data. So now I always go through the whole drill and make sure my GPS is "enabled". Hope this helps. Additionally, I thought the XT was going to work during the swim, so then was told to strap it to my GOGGLE strap which was ridiculous, but even so... I swam about .75 miles and my garmin said 2.25 mile swim (mostly due to the GPS thing) so that was kind of a bummer too. Anyway good luck!!
  • Just an FYI on the 310xt swim thing. The latest firmware has a swim feature that when enabled give pretty accurate distances. I used it (on my wrist) at LP last weekend and eagleman the weekend before with fairly successful results.

You need to be sure to go to Mode > Other > Settings > Swim > Yes - to enable swim mode (this is from memory check the firmware update page to be sure).

Update: real 2.9 swim  instructions from garmin.com https://buy.garmin.com/shop/sto...e.jsp

Implemented swim code that corrects distance values on open water swims. The distance is not displayed in real-time, but updates when the stop or lap button is pressed. This feature can be enabled only in 'Other' sport by going to Settings > Other Settings > Swim > Enabled ? Yes.

  • Oooh, Cary, that's good info. I gotta download that firmware. My Eagleman Swim said we swam almost 3 miles :-) I know the course was long, but it sure wasn't THAT long!
  • I've used the new swim feature twice ... mine came out to 0.55 miles for a half mile swim and 0.94 for the HIM that was short last weekend. While not perfect, both seem pretty accurate to me and SIGNIFICANTLY better than previous devices and firmware.

  • Great news Matt. I am doing several lake swims in mid-July so I am looking forward to the updated capabilities on the swim.

Did you wear the Garmin on your wrist or under your cap? I have not tried wearing it under my cap yet but that seems like it will be uncomfortable.

Also, I was not able to open your activities. The message said "insufficient credentials to view" or something like that. THanks!
  • @Mark, try again, I just changed my privacy settings on garminconnect. I wear it on the wrist, there is no way I am going to waste the time to move it from my swim cap to my wrist during a race and take a chance at dropping it and having to stop to pick it up.

I've heard it is more accurate in the swim cap though.

My 310xt had me down for 1.28 miles at Eagleman - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/37897646

  • @Matt, if I were as fast as you I wouldn't chance it either. I know you are not doing Louisville but if you were I suspect you would finish the race, get a massage and rehydrate, take a shower, take a nap, have dinner, watch Avatar and still have time to mosey on down in time to watch me finish! Oofh.

I probably won't wear mine in my cap either. But I am going to do the same lake swim a few times, at least once with it on my wrist and once under my cap just to see what the difference looks like. I will be sure to post later in July to let everyone see the results. I did the route in a kayak with the Garmin earlier this year and it is a 1.5 mile course. Thanks for posting your swims.
  • @Cary, Matt, Linda - Thanks for your help - unfortunately the race simulation file was corrupted but I was finally able to update the firmware software (FYI - if you have Windows 7, you have to log in as an administrator in order for the update to be transferred from the ANT agent to the watch)
  • @joe - the garmin folks could't recover the file for you?
  • No - we tried a few things, the support rep thought that the file was corrupt and was preventing the firmware update from transferring from my ANT agent to my watch so I deleted it
  • I just purchase a 310 xt and I'm wondering how to get the data from Garmin connect to WKO+. Also, do most people use garmin connect or do you use the garmin training center. I'm not to tech savy, so this process has been quite.....interesting. I also haven't upgraded to the new WKO+----do I have to in order to transfer data? I remember hearing that the 310 xt didn't play well with the older version. Thanks for any help.
  • i use both the 310xt and the cyclops... both are transferable....when you upload your information the drop down section in wko has several if not (too many) choices to download....choose 310kt and the port with which to capture the information...check the date...make sure its the correct...my cyclops is wacked and have to change it every download
    clear as mud?

Keith- WKO 2.2 did have some issues playing nice with the Garmin and the upload process was quite messy.  If you have a Garmin 310XT I highly recommend upgrading to WKO 3.0

Check the Wiki for more detail, there should be a link in there to blog posts by DC Rainmaker and our own Craig Harris who put together a good summary of the issues and workarounds.

  • Ok, I've looked through many forum discussions about garmin and WKO, etc. I've done an altitude correction as stated by highlighting the graph & fixing it using GPS. However, this did not change the elevation profile in WKO, so the profile is still very off. It has me gaining 300 ft in the first mile---I live on a hill and have no where to run except down to leave my house. The profile looks correct when I look at it in Garmin connect. Is there anyway to upload from Garmin Connect to WKO+ 3.0? Any suggestions?
  • @Keith, Garmin Connect applies correction to the file that were uploaded to it (this can be turned off). You can download the TCX file from the Garmin Connect Activity (underneath the map there's and export button/icon), but I'm not sure that it will include the corrections. Give it a shot and report back.
