What is the best way to handle a blown front tire to minimize the chances of falling?

  • sitting up, braking as aggressively as possible without wiping out.. what type of terrain? downhill, not best
a little bit of profanity per Mark Twain, never hurts - "Under certain circumstances, urgent circumstances, desperate circumstances, profanity provides a relief denied even to prayer."
  • If possible maintain a straight line and brake as conservatively as possible.  Apply most, if not all of the braking force to the rear wheel.

Once you start applying aggressive forces (braking or turning) to that front wheel things start getting real squirrelly.  If you have to turn do it as gradual as possible.
  • 1) Sit up as @Scott Dinhofer mentions
    2) Brake on back wheel aggressively as @Doug Johnson advises
    3) As you are braking unclip both pedals as soon as possible
    4) Focus entirely on holding the front handle bars as straight as possible and not leaning to either side
    5) Once you have made a complete stop, clean your pants out then replace tube.....

  • Unweight the front wheel by shifting your body weight to the rear wheel, think about reducing the pressure on your hands and thus on the front wheel.
Try to bring your bike back to vertical as quickly as you can, leaning to either side increases your odds of ripping the tire off of the wheel.
  • Do a wheelie like Peter Sagan.
  • In addition to all of these, i recommend getting a mountain bike and doing some trail riding.    This is where my love for cycling was born and I owe my bike handling skills to this.   Triathletes are not knows as the best bike handlers and those that do a lot of road cycling are better, but the mountain/cross cyclists have the best skills.

Oh...and mountain biking is SO MUCH FUN!
