Spline and Cassette came off PT hub as I removed rear wheel - is this bad?

This is a new one for me. Back from Eagleman, I just took my rear wheel off the bike to take off the wheel cover, the cassette and spline (is that the right term) just slid down the axle.

This is a new Wheelbuilder PT wheel that has maybe 10 hours on it. Is this really bad???

  • HA! That's basically what happened to me just a few days BEFORE Eagleman. I ran it to the LBS and they fixed it up- said it really was no big deal. I apparently tightened the cassette lock bolt a little too much or something.
  • I'm riding with Rich in about 13' and will show him the pic
  •  should not be a big deal at all.  That is what it looks like when you change back and forth from a shimano to a campy hub body.  I would take the cassette off the hub body and then put them back on seperately [I think].  IIRC there is a small allen key that holds on the hub body.

  • Thanks everyone.

Rich - I'll wait to hear what Rich from WB says before I do anything- thanks!
  • @Rich did you speak to WB rich today?
  • Spoke with Rich at Wheelbuilder today. This is completely normal. Put the casette/freehub back on the wheel and screwed the cap on as per his instructions.

Incidentally, this is his recommended way of putting on/removing a wheel cover.
  • I see his point, because it is easier and less messy to pull the entire hub, then take the cassette off and possible have to put each cog and spacer back one at a time if you don't hold keep them prefectly aligned.
