Bike Special Needs

Hey ENers! I will be doing my first full IM this year at Louisville and I have a question regarding the bike special needs.  Do you only get one opportunity to stop or two?  I'm thinking I would be fine at 56 but could use a stop later on down the road. If not, that's fine, I just need to know either way. I'm starting to draft my race plan. Thanks so much.

  • @Sabra Gonzalez I would check the athlete guide from the IM website. There is going to be one bike special needs, and it will show you around what mile it happens.
  • @Sabra Gonzalez It looks like we pass it during the two loop section in Lagrange at mile 25 and 60.

    SPECIAL NEEDS BAGS
You will receive an orange Bike Special Needs Bag and black Run
Special Needs Bag at Athlete Check-In. Special needs stations will be
located near the mid-point on the bike and run course. These special
needs stations are for special needs purposes, such as nutritional items
or an extra pair of socks, etc. Prior to the swim start, drop your special
needs bags in the designated area near transition at the North Great
Lawn. Do NOT put anything of value in your bike or run special needs
bags. Special needs bags will NOT be returned.

  • Sabra - that's a great question and depends on the race.  I did IMLOU two years ago but I don't use special needs.  You will pass the bags twice, but my GUESS is that you only get one opportunity to take it.  What you will need to ask from the course director is whether if you take it the first time they put it back in the original holding box or move it to a discard box.  To be absolutely safe, you should plan on grabbing it only one time, and treat a second time as a bonus.
  • Thanks, everyone!  Printing out the Athlete's Guide right now.  I hope I don't have to stop, but it is good to know it's there, and will anticipate only ONE opportunity.
  • In most IM races you only get it once and it's around the half way point. Also note for Louisville, bike and run special needs bags will not be returned.
