Joe Rubino's Official Coach Thread

Here's your personal Coach Thread, as promised. This is where you'll return to post all your "coach" questions as responses; I'll see them and reply. This first post is here to guide you through your first year on EN, so you can always come back here.

As you'll see in this forum, I handle all manner of edits and changes.  So post away, know that I reply here usually M/W/F each week.

Your Notes

Originally joined EN in 2011 prior to first IM (Lake Placid) in 2012.  Then again in 2012 prior to 2013 (Lake Placid).  Followed the plans well and had great experiences and strong times (for me at least) - best time of 12:40.  Then continued to race but didn't really follow a plan at IM France (2015) and IM Mont Tremblant (2017).  The finishing times showed the lack of real focus in accordance to a plan (especially my lack of consistent running), but the family vacations were the primary focus, so that part was good.  Also got derailed in the last couple years with a bike crash and (second) collarbone break and subsequent surgeries.   Other than that have had no injuries throughout my years of endurance training and racing.  Returning back to Placid in 2018 for my 5th Ironman and am in a good work/life situation that I can go all in, so am hoping for some big fitness gains and a strong result.  Took about 2 weeks off after Tremblant this year and have since been following your recommended Run Durability guidance and been feeling good.  Been running 6 days a week since and averaging about 25-28 miles per week.

Comments

  • Thanks so much, Coach P.  Just a quick follow up note and a question...

    1) I'm doing Chattanooga 70.3, so want to make sure you were aware (sorry, must not have gotten through when I filled out the original survey)
    2) I thought I read in the forums that races after July 1st would mean a January OS start.  In the past I've felt kinda wrecked coming out of the outseason - almost like I'm peaking in April vs. July, but maybe that's the point.  I'll do whatever you think is best, so let me know given my Placid target if the November OS is the best start or if I should transition to January and continue with the Run Durability Program until then.  Thanks!  Joe
  • @Joe Rubino - yes, races after 7/1 are a Jan start....but you have 70.3® CHOO!

Sorry I didn't get it in the list ^above^ the first time.

    We have two options:

    1. Nov OS with recovery time and then a HIM build to CHOO before transitioning to IM plan.
    2. We chill this fall with RDP and go Jan OS, shortened to 10 weeks (vs 14) so we can get recovery and then teh 70.3® plan into CHOO before the big race.

    Thoughts?

    ~ Coach P
  • Great options - Thanks Coach P.  Yes, I'm really liking the RDP so let's go with Option 2, especially to keep me right mentally as I recently (slowly) finished Tremblant.  Thanks!   Joe
  • And one more thing before I forget, Coach P.  Not even sure if I would qualify, but wanted to get your thoughts on me entering the EN Elite program when I kick off the OutSeason in January.  Looks really interesting, so if you may have openings and I if I meet the entrance criteria, I'd like to learn more.  Thanks!
  • @joe rubino - great to talk yesterday!!! Here are my notes for you...
    • The routine you are seeking is what will set you free. You are currently at 28 to 29 miles per week, I don't want any more than 30 until after January. We don't need it. Work on the depth, play with distances and terrain (add some hillier course in Nov/Dec) and give your self a lighter week every 4th week.
    • Be sure to check out GroupMe Chat for RDP
    • Use the fall to set up Zwift, info on that is here in the wiki...I recommend you add a Zwift FTP Builder plan like this 4 week one, where I recommend you only bike Day 2, Day 4, Day 5, and Day 7 (drop Day 5 if you can only do 3 rides).
    • Placid Camp - dates are TBD...either the weekend of June 21 - 24 or June 28 - July 1. I will post it on the Camps Page here likely in November.

Also, January OS…what are some goals for you there?

    • Body Comp Dialed in to within 5 LBs of Race Weight
    • Running 35 miles a week (on average) across the 14 weeks.
    • FTP target of 275 (starting from now)...aim high baby!
    Hope this helps...

    Cco

Ps - yes to EliteEN...it opens in Dec/January and I will be in touch!
  • @Coach Patrick - Thanks for the talk, Coach.  Great to catch up.  Could you please update my season outline above with the changes we've discussed (i.e. continuing run durability through fall, entering January outseason with Chattanooga 70.3 and IMLP as targets).  Thanks!

  • @“joe Rubino” - I most certainly will!!!
  • @joe rubino this is done...a bit "lighter" in the Fall with RDP. Note that you will exit RDP3 one week early into the OutSeason® plan!
  • Hey Coach - Schedule Update... I'm not doing Chattanooga 70.3 (kids' sports commitments), so will only be focusing on IMLP this year.  Could you please take a look at my transition from OS to Half to IM plan and make any recommended adjustments.  Thanks very much.
  • Joe -

Done! I have incorporated the swim camp a plan for a bit of post out season recovery, and then I have you in the big bike week plan for one week. It’s still early in the year given where we live, but it will be a good starting point for us to discuss how to boost your volume on the bike before you hit the entire training plan.

    Have a good weekend !
