What does this mean exactly?

Can someone shed some light on what this means exactly to make sure I am clear on what I can and can't use during my race in Cozumel?

_____

** Important: Due to the strong cross winds during a portion of the bike segment, the use of disc wheels will be strictly forbidden, and the front wheel has to be of spoke construction, so please take this into consideration to select your racing wheels.    Race officials will monitor this at bike check in.

That is straight from the IMCoz website...I am assuming Zipp 808s would serve this race well?

Thanks guys

  • Sounds like no discs and maybe no tri-spoke type wheels for for the front. Sounds like 808s would be fine, but if the crosswinds are that bad, you might consider something a little more shallow. 404s maybe? Unless the winds are REALLY bad, 808s should be okay, but I've had a couple of instances where I didn't feel too safe on my 808s due to extremely strong crosswinds... and I'm near clydsdale weight.
  • Great point at the end on weight...

I am likely to weigh about 155 come race day, and I stand about 5'10.5". I have never rolled with anything other than my stock wheels on my P1...and I am under the impression that my wife my be doing some wheels for me for my bday, which is what prompted this post.

    With this new information...thoughts?
  • Sounds like No Discs, No HED 3s or Xentis either.

A pair of 404s or a 404/808 combo would pass this test.
  • I raced Coz. last year - used 404 front/808 back with no problems (I weighed <150 on race day) .... winds on back side of course are pretty tough - head to cross and very gusty...</p>

  • They are really concerned about the winds...so no disc in back and no tri-spoke (think Hed) construction in the front. Gotta look like real wheels!

I have a set of Xentis 4-spokes, and while you would never think that their profile is that 'deep', I get blown all over the place on windy races. That's unfortunate, because they're super light - and they make that cool 'voomp voomp voomp' sound like all carbon tubie wheels do. Sounds cool to pass people with them! LOL

I'd love to get a Xentis Mark I front clincher - they seem to be very hard to find in the states right now.

  • @Cary, if I could find Xentix clinchers I'd love them too! I saw a pair at IMFL 2008, I asked the guy where he got them, he said Europe. Figures!
  • A European guy staying at my hotel this past weekend at Eagleman had a pair of mark I Clinchers. I was coveting them (well the front at least).
