Garmin Chest HR Strap

Greetings All - my Garmin chest HR strap usually works just fine from 30-60 minutes.  However after that time, my HR readings usually drop in half which I know is not correct.  I've changed the battery and no change in function.  Any ideas?

The strap is not old, maybe 2.5 years.  I've washed it too.

Thanks all,

Chris

  • Chris, I was having same issues with my Garmin HR strap. I finally got fed up and replaced it with the Wahoo Tickr. It's compatible with Garmin devices and transmits in Bluetooth and ANT+
  • Mine just died too, only 9 months old
  • I've had a Timex HR strap, similar to but a little lighter than Garmin, going on three years now. I use it daily for all running and cycling, so it probably has at least 1500 hours of use. Needs a 2032 battery occasionally, but otherwise it has been rock solid, and pairs easily with every ANT+ device I have. I bought it originally because my Garmin was not talking to my Joule, and was giving me a rash as well.

There should be Darwin awards for tech stuff - some things stand the test of time, and others don't evolve well.
  • I was having similar issues on mine. When I took the dongle off I notice rusting around one of the connections. Had to replace it.
  • Thanks for all the input.  Sounds like I need a new strap and since everyone's Garmin seems to suck after a year of so, maybe its time to try a Timex - takes a licking, buts keeps on ticking!

  • Old strap = easy to loosen after 30 - 60 minutes = bad or no HR readings.  Consider buying only the elastic portion if budget is a concern.  That will prob do the trick.....
  • Without being too cynical, my Garmindevices seem to break down just before races,  HR Monitor not with standing. Most recent isgarmin 920xt , turns out it was the cable had gone south and i could not download some work outs. Now gone south is Garmin swim , still not fixed, have narrowed down to ant device too old like me.  I all seriousness, I. Do live by and rely on those devices.  There's always a new better one.  Then there is the cost, any one have $700 laying around.  HA!  My best HR monitor is my wrist pulse.
