edited October 23, 2017 5:16PM in Coaching Forum 🧢

Here's your personal Coach Thread, as promised. This is where you'll return to post all your "coach" questions as responses; I'll see them and reply. This first post is here to guide you through your first year on EN, so you can always come back here.

As you'll see in this forum, I handle all manner of edits and changes.  So post away, know that I reply here usually M/W/F each week.

Power User Tip: Click the Star icon by the Title of this thread to subscribe, and you'll get email updates when I do reply.

Comments

  • Since it is already the middle of the week should I start the trial week next Monday?
  • @Austin McCollum - no, you can roll now. You just need to test the bike and run sometime between now and Sunday...
  • @Austin McCollum I updated your Season Roadmap above with specific guidance for your other races; and I shortened the Bike Focus plan to just four weeks...this will give you enough time to exit it, and get up to speed in the Short Course plan to go from there!!!

Let me know what you think!

    ~ Patrick
  • how do i download the run durability part1

  • so with my tournament being this Friday, sat and possibly Sunday what should I do about my Friday, sat and Sunday workouts? I for sure won't be able to do the bike because I will be in las vegas and not Michigan
  • edited October 30, 2017 5:01PM
@Austin McCollum - I recommend you do the following...

    1. Move the Sat long ride (or "a" ride) to Wednesday and drop that Wednesday run.
    2. Move the Sun Long run to Thursday (as much as you can).
    3. Friday to Sunday is tournament time...so go crush that and we get back on it when you are home.
    Good luck!!!

    ~ Coach P

Ps, let's get you to change your profile picture here when you get a chance!!!

  • @Austin McCollum - Good luck this weekend!!! I am super excited to see you on the RDP Group Me connecting with other folks. That's super good stuff.

There are two points I wanted to work with you on as you get started...

Nutrition Focus:  You are already in such a good place with what you have achieved, so we don't want to get so crazy. But I think you might benefit form watching our webinar on the Daily Nutrition for Endurance Athletes with our friend Jesse at The Core Diet: http://www.screencast.com/t/tKL7FyF6CR8x

Open Water Swim:  The fear you have is real, and swimming in general will help, but you'll need to get some time in the open water as well (planned time, or events) to make sure you have a chance to grapple with it before you dive in (bad joke) to the actual race.

Do you have open water swim stuff in your area, like practices, etc?
  • @Coach Patrick
I don't know if there are any open water swim practices in this area or not but I will talk to @Larry Peters and see if he knows of any

  • Hey @Coach Patrick  & @Austin McCollum , the most popular & closest (to me and maybe to Austin) OW group swim I know is Monday nights at Bostwick lake. I'm sure people have stopped by now. I first read about it on a running group website years ago, I think, but I never went at that time. This summer, I rode my bike up there on Monday night & there were a bunch of swimmers there. They were not all synchronized and not all doing the same workout, but they were all doing OWS training. I chatted w/ one of the guys & he said that the group ebbs & flows, but it was rather big this year. Obviously, that is only during warmer months.

I love OWSing at PJ Hoffmaster State Park (~45-55 min drive). Great place for race rehearsals. Saugutuck can be nice, but it is deeper (quicker drop-off) & when I swam there the swell was relatively big.

I'm hoping to do more workouts & OWS at the site of Steelhead IM 70.3 in Benton Harbor next summer. Seems like a great place for training.
