NEW “GADGETS” ROI.. To Buy or not to Buy.

Albeit, I’m one of those that easily falls into temptation without properly evaluating how much time gadget investment will “return” at the finish line.
That is if RETURN is measured in minutes (or seconds ?) PER DOLLAR INVESTED versus how much pleasure one extracts from having “the new thing” (which is also valid).
Funny thing is, I spent all my professional life doing just that: making business decisions based return on investment based; but thus far, a significant portion of my triathlon related purchases happen “because I feel like it and I can” versus it’s truly going to make me master.
This time around I almost purchased the new ROKA VIPER PRO short sleeve swimskin (used by coach Patrick in KONA).
My “reasoning”: even though I already have a practically brand new ROKA VIPER PRO sleeveLESS swimskin, the sleeve will make me faster for one of two reasons:

(1) my Castelli shirt sleeves will be covered by fabric which is allegedly more efficient in the water (now much faster?), or

(2) I will gain about 15 seconds by not having to put on my shirt at T1.

At $285 price tag that means that if it makes me faster, say 2 seconds per 100 mts, that equals 38 seconds at my next race (Cartagena 70.3) ..... are 38 seconds worth $285 ???? At a first glance it sounds ridiculous, but some might remember I was out of the podium in Saint George by 4 seconds ..... but .... would have I payed $285 to be on that podium???

If the answer is “not worth the 38 seconds” then I’m left with three options:
  • Swim with the Castelli kit shirt under my sleeveless skin
  • Swim without the shirt and lose those 15-20 seconds at T1
  • Assume I’m spending $285 just for the pleasure of being “up to date”
The answer seems obvious ..... is it???
The fact is I have not pulled the trigger but the danger is .... my next race is still 6 weeks away!!!!
