Right now PowerTap has "Factory Reconditioned" P1 pedals for $799. I would assume they come with full warranty. may want to check with them on that, but that may be a nice option.
I know they aren't pedals, but I have two Powertap hubs and really love them. absolutely indestructible, and just add a wheel cover on race day and you have disk-like performance. I used Wheelbuilder, and they are great.
Pedals won't be the cheapest, but a big plus is that they can be moved easily if you use multiple bikes. And as long as the pedal/cleat type works for you, you don't have to worry about compatibility. The P1 had been the best option for a couple of years since it was easier to install and more reliable than the Vector pedals. But the Vector 3 now has better features in a smaller package than the P1, at the same price. And the Favero Assioma is solid and $200 cheaper. DCRainmaker has a detailed comparison here: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/09/power-meter-pedal-shootout-vector-3-vs-powertap-p1-vs-assioma.html
The non-pedal options depend more on your bike setup. I use a Power2Max Type S which just works and is one of the cheaper options out there (their new model, the NG Eco, is coming out soon starting at only $490). If you have compatible cranks, the Watteam Powerbeat is only $399 for dual-sided power. You might also be able to find a cheap wheel with a Powertap hub, though you will only get power with that wheel so make sure it will work for training and racing. I would avoid the single-sided power meters (i.e., left leg only) if possible since many of us have legs that fatigue at different rates.
Ask any of the Kona participants to get you a pair of P1s... they have a code (or can get one) that will get you 40% off... that's either $600 for the P1s or $260 (I think) for the 1 sided version.. if they can't find the code, PM me, I'll give you instructions..
I bought P1’s earlier this year. The reason for getting them was the ease to change between bikes. It takes one minute to swap them around.
I think they are good pedals that provide accurate readings consistently and connect easy with my garmin. It’s truly a plug and play.
The only thing I would say is that it took some time to get used to them. I used to ride Shimano Ultegra and the cleats of the P1 are closer to Keo. Once you get used to them they are a great option.
I am looking to get some power meter going myself but don't really understand difference between hubs/pedals, so help here please. I was looking at pedals but also have to watch the price and of course single leg cheaper but maybe not worth it verses dual?
I have a PowerTap G3 hub I used for a few months, then got P1's a year ago and haven't used the P3 since. It's in perfect shape. Happy to ship the rear wheel and matching front wheel for a couple hundred. Will save you many hundreds (or a grand), will save me pain cave space and will save me the hassle of trying to sell them online. The wheels are mid-level Mavics or similar (can't remember). Perfect training wheels, rear can be modified with a disc cover for racing for around $100. PM me if interested. If you hate them, send me back, I'll refund and will eventually throw them online for sale. MR
I have an Ultegra 6800 172.5 left side only stages I used for one season. Perfect condition. I would sell it for $300. I switched to P1 pedals for dual sided option. PM if you are interested.
@Scott Dinhofer if you get that code let me know I would buy those in a second at that price!
Here is the problem with the code, it looks like it may be a unique code for everyone they give it to. I emailed from a blind email address (triguy914@gmail) and signed it with Tim's name, and she sent me a code - I would do the following - ask a Kona Participant to send an email to jamie hartmann at Saris with an email like the following jhartmann@saris.com
Hi - I was a kona participant and found out from a friend that you are offering a discount for P1 pedals to KQers.. is there a code you can pass along to me? thank you
once they get the code, THEY will have to buy the pedals, have shipped to themselves and then re-ship to you... I had my friend PP Tim first so he had the $ in hand before ordering the pedals.
btw, I know someone who tried to us a Kona participants code last year, and the transaction was rejected after it was reviewed, so they are checking a list.

@dave Legg the issue with hubbs (I used to have them) is that you need one for each wheel you use.. if you use a training wheel & a race wheel. A friend is using the one sided pedals, and they work great he says. The other advantage to pedals is that you can put them on anything. I've used them for road riding on my MTB when I took it to CO a few years ago (switched to MTB pedals with no power for the race). I also use them for my tuesday night winter gravel rides on my gravel grinder... best way to truly know how much work you are doing.. (besides having your brain yell "shut up legs!")
Jackie and I are both using the P1s pedals. She has had them for about a year and they have worked great. There was a WiFi interference issue when on the trainer, but once that was sorted all is great. They have always worked good out on the road. I have had mine for only a few months, but I already love them. I have moved them between bikes and get consistent reading on both bikes.
I have work PT hubs, a pair of P1s, and a Stages L crank. All are rock solid, survive abuse and water, pair easily with my Garmin watch and Joule headunit. Most important each is internally consistent.
Not sure what BB you have (GXP, FSA, BB30, etc) or what length crank arm (170mm, 172.5mm, 175mm, etc.), but there are a ton of Powermeter options on eBay in the $200-$400 range... pros and cons to each, but it $ is your single parameter, then don't hesitate to buy used:
Thank you guys for all the insight think I have a direction to go. I am sure I will have more questions down the road and look foreword to your feedback as you are a huge help to me.
Wow @John Withrow , thanks a ton for all that great information!
Thanks @Dave Legg and everyone who contributed to this thread! It helped me a lot and I have some power pedals in the mail!
This is going to rock my pain-cave world! Until now, I've only had HR and perceived exertion for trainer rides (and I live in Michigan --> lots of snowy/bad weather riding days). I had cadence set up back in 2009-2010, but hadn't set that back up this year.
I look forward to getting set up on Zwift & hopefully getting some rides with the team!

Keep an eye out for the DCRainmaker power meter buyer's guide which should be coming out soon. Here is last year's: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2016/09/power-meters-buyers-guide2016-edition.html
