  • I for one will give a nod to the aerohead.  I actually hated how this thing looked - like a gunner from the DeathStar - but the visibility is amazing.  The visor is solidly attached via magnets and doesn't jar loose like my last helmet--big selling point.  It covers my ears well.  All depends on your position, but it mates with my back very well in an aero position.
  • Thanks for sending this @Brenda Ross and @Jeff Horn . I've been a fan for the last three years of of the Rudy Wing 57. Perhaps it's not the lightest and most aero TT lid out anymore?

  • Following this closely; I have been thinking about picking up the Aerohead MIPS if I see a good sale price. For the last few years I have been using the Bontrager Ballista aero road helmet which is great, but not as fast as the Aerohead.

  • I can fit only the Large Giro helmets (currently running with a Giro Advantage II), but the Aerohead large won't fit my giant cranium!

  • I didn't see in the article how it determined which are "best". The received wisdom by those with extensive aero testing is that you simply CANNOT know which helmet is best for you unless you test in a tunnel or on the velodrome. For the vast majority, testing it too expensive and not feasible, so the best advice is to buy a helmet that has performed well on MOST of the people who have been tested in order to increase your odds of getting one that actually works. Testing results from "aerocamp" in LA suggest the Giro Aerohead is a great helmet and the old Giro A2 is another good choice. I have both of these. I would caution people that a lot of people think the Aerohead is a hot and heavy helmet. Others think it is fine even at Kona. However, I'm going to use an aero road helmet instead of a TT helmet at Kona next year and am leaning towards the Specialized S-Works Evade II.

As to Rudy Project, friends don't let friends wear them if aero gains are the objective.

  • @Paul Hough I have aero road S-Works Evade and love it. Very comfortable and not hot or heavy.

    e.

  • It may be over, but competitive cyclist had a 50% off deal on Aerohead MIPS from Giro in 2 color schemes. I ordered on Friday & got it already. :) @Mike Westover

  • Thanks @Larry Peters! I ended up getting one for $175 a few weeks ago; I didn't expect to see them drop even lower! The helmet looks great and I'm looking forward to racing with it.

  • @Sheila Leard - that's a great helmet, but it's an "aero road" helmet.. not as slick as a TT or Tri helmet.

+3 on the aerohead MIPS... great helmet

  • Has anybody tried the Kask Bambino or heard from someone who has used it?

I've heard good things about the Aerohead MIPS, but also that it is relatively heavy? @scott dinhofer have you noticed that relative to past helmets?

  • @Jeff Phillips - I've worn the MIPS Aerohead in 4 IMs and a bunch of 70.3s. It's not light but it doesn't give me any neck issues either. That probably depends on the individual though. It will definitely be going with me to IM Ireland next year.
