Zwift for Newbies
Zwifting seems to have reached Critical Mass, and I imagine with the OS gearing up, many of us will want to try out this next gen version of training indoors. If Gen 1 was simply a trainer, Gen 2 was the CompuTrainer, Gen 3 Trainer Road, we are seeing Training 4.0
EN has a core group of Early Adopters, and their threads have moved along briskly, reflecting the on-going experience accrued amongst them. But it can daunting to read through them if you have no idea what they are talking about. Even so, like EN in general, there are a number of EN Zwifters who are willing to help folks along. EG, @Brian Hagan, @Tim Sullivan , and others. But I fear they will be crushed under a heavy workload if we don't do our own homework and find additional sources of information about the basics.
Zwift is a hybrid deal, cross between a video game and an indoor cycling aid. It clearly has its programing roots in games, and also the programmers' attitude towards instructions. Meaning, if you can't figure it out and get up to speed, it's your fault, not ours.
Luckily, Slowtwitch is coming to our rescue. Yesterday, they published the first of what promises to be a series of explanatory articles:

The guy writing them comes from the DC Rainmaker school of explication: Why use one sentence, when 2 or 3 will do just as well? But he does cover all the deets on getting yourself set up and going, step by step. In this first installment, he describes how to get rolling with the bare minimum equipment, just a simple "dumb" trainer. All you really need, besides the bike and trainer, is a speed sensor and a means (ANT+ or Bluetooth) to transmit that to Zwift via your computer. Next up, I suppose, will be Smart Trainers, then Racing.
If you are starting the OS, or planning a Jan start, and want to see how (or if) Zwift can help your training, don't be fearful. It's worth a look, and at least a free seven day trial, or even $10 for a month's admission. For many of us, the biggest initial advantage might well be shared suffering. There are now two weekend group rides (a thing which is possible in ZwiftWorld) @ 0800 EST Sunday, and 0800 PST Saturday. If you can;t stand the thought of 2.5 hours on the trainer, and its snowing outside, this may be the answer.
And, just because I started this thread, that doesn't mean I know anything...

In terms of V02, I have found the 1 lap, 6.2 mile race to be brutal and effective. It is basically a 1 X 15' @ 1.15 - 1.20
These races require little or no prep work other than a good warm up and push you hard that just doing the interval work on your own as written.

When trying to pair the KICKR, several options are available. The one with "FE C" in the name is the one to use. I'll find out for sure this Saturday if I can go more than 30 minutes without a power dropout. Losing the connection between the trainer and the site pretty much boogers any opportunity to ride with others...

@Paul Hough what do you think of Rouvy real video thus far? I used BKOOL for a while, but it was overpopulated with Vuelta videos, and took me forever to pick a course to ride out of the 300000 vids.
I found this “unofficial guide” to be a great way to get started.

I use TrainingPeaks to build structured workouts and then export to Zwift.

A random tip - to avoid signal drop out (not specific to any device, but found that some times trainer / PM / HRM would randomly drop out) bought a USB cable extension from Amazon which brings the ANT+ dongle right next to my bike.
And there's something bizarrely attractive about riding by a lava flow, and then into a jungle of Mayan ruins...
Thanks to the guys who wrote the Zwift wiki (http://members.endurancenation.us/Resources/Wiki/tabid/91/Default.aspx?topic=Zwift+-+Getting+Started)....it helped loads
Found Scott's link BUT it had already expired.
