Mini-Review: The Gutr vs. the Halo

No, this isn't some morality play... it's about SWEAT.  My mini-review of the Gutr headband is in the wiki.

  • I haven't tried the Gutr, but I did buy a Halo a year ago - total waste of money. All the Halo does is delay the sweat dripping onto my glasses by maybe...5 minutes...then it's like I didn't have it on. On a long ride that 5 mins isn't squat. Maybe I'll try the Gutr, but I'm just resigned to looking like the pilot in the movie Airplane...sweat coming off my head like a fire hydrant.
  • Unfortunate, Paul. The Halo was a terrific purchase for me, makes an immense difference on hot outdoor rides, as well as trainer sessions. Keeps the sweat going outside my eyes, instead of into them.
  • Mike, maybe it works when it's hot, but it damn sure doesn't work when it's HOT. image Try it in Tampa and tell me how great it is...hee, hee, hee.
  • Must be an individual thing. I've been a happy repeat customer, and yes have used it in HOT conditions as well.
  • @Paul, you might want to try the Gutr then.  I think it would work better in situations where you're really, really sweating.

  • I have a halo and it has worked great for me and I sweat ALOT! I think Texas can also claim HOT! But I imagine stuff like that can all be different from person to person.
  • I have used the Halo for the last two years, and I've never had an issue, but in the northeast, we don't get the hot humidity of FL except in July/August. Even then, though, I still like the Halo (except for the line across my forehead that lasts for HOURS after I take it off).
  • Got a halo, kinda tight (headache) doesn't work that great for me. I've been wearing the same 2-3 bandana's for about 8yrs now. Maybe I'll try the Gutr

With my BAH (big ass head) I use the Halo bandana (so you can tie it to the appropriate diameter).

On the Gutr side, they have some funky velcro-y stuff to adjust it, and a fancy rubber band to provide some give.

  • Pearl Izumi has a headband for $12 that wicks sweat. black and white and I tried it here and it worked great! it absorbs but didn't feel soaking wet like a traditional sweat head band.
  • Thx Marianne. I've had good luck with Pearl Izumi products. Most cycling gloves I bought (including the IM brand) ended up bleeding ink all over my hands after a month of long rides in soaking, sweat filled, humidity. Pearl Izumi gloves have been steadfast. I'll be on the lookout for their headband.
  • De Soto Skin Cooler beanie. I don't know about the cooling benefits, but it absolutely prevents sweat from dripping down in your eyes. 100%.
  • Short version: Gutr has worked for me too.
  • I have been using the gutr for almost a year and it works well for me also. That said, I used a Halo in the past and liked it as well, but prefer the Gutr.
  • Just to test it out again, I ran with a Halo yesterday - 2 hour trail run in ~80 degree heat. By the end it was fully staturated, but I only got one small drip during the run. I still prefer the Gutr.

  • Just ordered one, thanks for the reviews!

  • I am on my second week using the Gutr.  It works great  and keeps the sweat out of my eyes.  It fits nicely under a hat or under my helmet, can't even tell I have it on.
