More rides-what % of FTP

I'm hoping that this summer proves to be pretty relaxing and I'll have the opportunity to ride my bike daily as I don't work in the summer.  I'm going to follow the OS plan to structure some of the rides, but I also plan on riding to the pool and getting in other rides on the non-ride days.  What % of FTP should these additional rides be so that I just don't completely cook myself?  I'm thinking the average length will be 1-1.5 hours, so my head is saying to keep between 75-85%.  Even though I'm following the OS, I'm going to do the Saturday ride as is, but a ABP ride on Sundays.

Should I narrow down that FTP % any?

Thanks.

  • Keith - I've been bike commuting to work for about 15 years. Now it's about 2 days/week, as I work part time. Before following EN OS training plan with the 2-3 days a week of really hard rides,  I would hammer those commutes, 1.5 hours round trip. Now, I do them at "JRA" pace - ends up at about 65% of FTP for the ride. I view them as "recovery" rides, to allow me to get full benefit from the FTP intervals or sustained long rides at 85%on the "real" training days.

  • What Al said. Unless it's a straight bike ride only, just JRA it. If you want, you can do intervals w/ gearing, as 5' easy at 90rpms, 5' easy at 105 rmps, 5' easy at 65 rpms (standing). All good work even if it isn't "WORK". image
